Recently, K-State students beautified the Be Able Community garden for their clients to enjoy. The Be Able Community, a local community-based organization, serves those in the community facing difficult seasons in their lives by providing access and connections to available resources.

Students from MANRRS, Students for Environmental Action, Popenoe Entomology Club and more care for this garden for Be Able Community.

This project is made possible and funded through the Kansas Black Farmers Association (KBFA) Land Access Grant.

Dr. Griffiths Atungulu, Professor at the University of Arkansas at the Department of Food Science, along with his students Christabel Tache and Stephanie Kinchen, visited Insect Farming Initiative earlier this semester.

During this visit, we provided a tour at the Insect Farming Initiative facilities, emphasizing potential collaboration on the valorization of agricultural byproducts.

Dr. Daniel Brabec, from the USDA-ARS, Center for Grain and Animal Health Research also visited with interested in using rice byproducts and agricultural side streams in insect farming, where there is a gap in data so far. Our guests were introduced to some of the yellow mealworm protocols of the Insect Farming Initiative along with the process of making frass.

Our department's Insect Farming Initiative brought live mealworms to Ag Ville at Bramlage and educated people on the expanding industry of insect farming.

Mealworms can take waste and turn it into valuable material! Take wheat bran or other food scraps for example. Mealworms can feed on it and produce more mealworms and frass. The mealworms themselves can be used as feed, and the frass can be used in agrifood systems, such as a soil additive for gardens.
