Contra Costa County’s Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters, District Attorney, and Sheriff have issued a joint message ahead of the November 3rd General Election: every voter should be able to cast a ballot safely and with confidence.

Registrar Kristin B. Connelly expects another “safe and secure” election. District Attorney Diana Becton is committed to making sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot “freely, safely” and with confidence. Sheriff David Livingston is working with law enforcement partners to “protect residents’ right” to vote.

That commitment is backed by strong state law. The Peace Act (AB 2642) protects voters and election workers from intimidation at the polls. Legislation signed this September makes tampering with ballots, election records, or voting equipment a felony and adds protections against deepfakes and deception.

Whether by mail, drop box, or in person, every ballot is protected through the final count.

Sharing an update from the Contra Costa County Superior Court for residents and employers:

Beginning January 4th, 2027, the Court will move to a weekly jury summons model. Jurors will get a full day’s notice before reporting, midday call-ins will end, and those not asked to report during their service week will have completed their service for at least 12 months. The Court projects about 61,000 fewer summonses each year.

First summonses under the new model will be mailed on November 9th, 2026.

"Traffickers often target children for s*x work because they think no one will listen to minors when they report harm. This verdict shows that our office, our law enforcement partners, and our community are and were listening." – District Attorney Diana Becton

On October 15th, a Contra Costa County jury convicted Jamarr Lamont Victor of human trafficking of a minor after a 16-year-old girl called 911 in Richmond. This conviction reflects the work of the Richmond Police Department, Deputy District Attorney Jessica Murad, and our Human Trafficking Task Force partners.

District Attorney Diana Becton announced that Mark Lewis Hinton, 44, of Richmond, was sentenced on October 2nd to 169 years to life in state prison for forcibly ra**ng two women in 2022. While on parole for a prior r**e conviction, Hinton cut off his ankle monitor and went on to violently assault both women. A jury convicted him of 11 felony counts.

“These women showed extraordinary courage in facing the person who abused them and telling a jury what he did,” said District Attorney Becton. “Domestic violence cases are difficult to prosecute because abusers often isolate and intimidate their victims and choose people they believe won’t be heard. These survivors proved him wrong.”

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we stand with survivors. If you need help, call STAND! For Families Free of Violence at 888-215-5555, available 24 hours a day.

Today, at the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meeting, Rep. Mark DeSaulnier presented the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office with two checks to support the District Attorney's dedication to public safety in the county. One check is specifically earmarked for Organized Retail Theft prevention and prosecution. The other is to help survivors of labor trafficking. We're very grateful for Rep. DeSaulnier's work in Washington, D.C., which directly helps Contra Costa County residents through public safety, accountability, and support for survivors.

Thank you, Pittsburg! 💙

Yesterday, our office was proud to take part in Palabras con la Policía, hosted by the Pittsburg Police Department on the City Hall Lawn.

The event brought residents and officers together in a relaxed, welcoming setting, with a special focus on connecting with our Spanish-speaking neighbors.

The turnout was fantastic! Our team had the chance to meet so many community members, answer questions, and share information about the services our office provides and the work we do every day.

And of course, Fenner was a huge hit 🐾 She received lots of love from the community, and PPD officers made sure to stop by and say hello.

We're grateful to the Pittsburg Police Department for organizing this event, for their commitment to open communication and positive community interactions, and for the certificate recognizing our participation.

Events like this are a reminder that some of the most meaningful conversations happen outside of an emergency.

¡Gracias a todos los que vinieron a conversar con nosotros!

A young survivor took the stand and faced the people accused of harming her. This week, two separate juries in Martinez delivered their verdicts.

The case involved a former commercial airline pilot and a Walnut Creek woman. The trials were held in a rare format that allowed both defendants to be tried at once. District Attorney Diana Becton says the survivor's courage made a difference.

Today, at the Contra Costa County Block Party, District Attorney Diana Becton caught up with District 4 Supervisor Ken Carlson (his office and the Public Defender hosted the event) to talk about community outreach events like the Block Party and the many resources and services that are available to the residents of Contra Costa County. The Block Party was well attended with lots of families coming out to the event at the Pleasant Hill library. Staff from the DA’s Office, along with Bear and Fenner, also met lots of
folks at the DA’s information table where they could meet our facility dogs, get information on our Victim services, Vigilant Parents Initiative, apply to attend our Community Academy, and learn how to be a Community Safety Volunteer in our Neighborhood Restorative Partnership program. Oh, and we had a prize wheel! Big hit with the kids.
