The area around our penstock and New Colgate Powerhouse is looking pretty different from a few months ago - in a good way!

Our crews and contractors have made tremendous progress stabilizing the hillside around the penstock and powerhouse and preparing the area for winter. Over the next few weeks, we expect to have most of our winterization measures in place, including erosion controls, drainage improvements, monitoring systems and more.

Additional slope stabilization and sediment management work will continue through winter, but we're looking forward to seeing the hillside green up as vegetation takes hold next spring.

A big thank you to the crews working hard out there!

🌧️While California Flood Preparedness Week may be winding down, the rainy season is just getting started.🌧️

How will El Niño will impact our region? It’s still too early to know for sure.

“El Niño can influence winter weather patterns, but it doesn't necessarily mean we'll see significantly more or less precipitation in our area,” said Yuba Water Director of Resource Planning John James. “What matters most is the strength, timing and location of individual storms.”

El Niño or not, Yuba Water and our flood management partners prepare year-round for whatever winter may bring. But flood preparedness doesn't stop with us. We all have a role to play.

Think a "100-year flood" only happens once every 100 years? Think again.

Despite its name, a 100-year flood doesn't mean there's a century between major floods. It actually refers to a flood that has a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year. That means a 100-year storm could happen this year, next year or even multiple years in a row.

It's an important reminder that flood risk doesn't go away just because we haven't experienced a major flood in years. Hear more from local flood engineer Dave Gutierrez about what flood risk really means.

How is Yuba Water preparing for a potentially wet winter? El Niño or not, we plan every year as if a flood (or drought!) could occur, because it could! Here's what that looks like in practice:

📈 Closely monitoring weather forecasts to help inform our operations and releases at New Bullards Bar Dam and Reservoir

🤝 Coordinating and training with our local, state and federal partners on flood operations at Bullards Bar and Lake Oroville to help reduce downstream flood risk, as well as working with local levee districts to support levee improvements and levee monitoring

💧Making sure our dam and related flood risk reduction facilities are in tip-top-shape with proactive maintenance year-round

It's California Flood Preparedness Week!

When a big storm is in the forecast, knowing where to get accurate, timely information is so important. As we head into the rainy season, take a few minutes to bookmark and follow these trusted sources:

🌧️ US National Weather Service Sacramento California for weather forecasts, flood watches and warnings
🚨 Yuba County Office of Emergency Services for local emergency information and preparedness resources
🚔 Yuba County Sheriff's Department for evacuation warnings and orders

Remember, rumors and bad information can spread quickly online, especially during times of uncertainty. Always verify information with official sources before sharing it.

Work to stabilize the hillside around our penstock pipe above Colgate Powerhouse continues, with significant progress in recent weeks, including:

• Major grading and soil stabilization
• Installation of rocks and culverts for improved drainage
• Seeding and placement of netting to help further stabilize the hillside ahead of winter

Big shout out to our crews who have been working 6+ days a week (especially in the heat of the last couple of weeks) to keep this critical work moving forward before the rainy season!

Another great community meeting in Camptonville last night, where members of the North Yuba Forest Partnership continued the conversation about important work to improve forest resilience and reduce the risk of high-intensity fire across the Yuba River watershed.

A big thank you to the Camptonville Community Partnership for hosting, U.S. Forest Service-Tahoe National Forest for the great overview about what's been accomplished and planned future projects, and to all of the panelists for an in-depth conversation about the specific types of treatments being used to improve forest health in the region.

💧Happy California Water Professionals Appreciation Week!💧

Whether they’re working with Yuba County irrigators to deliver reliable surface water for farms, protecting our groundwater resources for generations to come, coordinating with local agencies to reduce flood risk, generating clean hydropower or supporting restoration of the Yuba River watershed, the work of our water professionals is felt across our region.

Our team has been faced with incredible challenges this year, and these folks rose to the occasion, continuing to cover all the "business as usual" while also taking on a ton of new, different work to help us rebuild following our penstock incident. To our amazing team and all the water professionals out there - THANK YOU for all you do to make a difference in our communities!
