We had an incredible visit today with Blount County native and Army Veteran, Pete Presley! 🇺🇸

Pete grew up right here in our community and graduated from Porter High School in 1967. He initially started a career with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), but duty called in 1969 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

Serving as a Light Weapons Infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Pete deployed to Vietnam in August 1969. Just a month later, on September 13, his unit faced a devastating claymore mine explosion. While the blast tragically claimed the lives of two fellow soldiers, Pete survived with severe injuries. Following emergency surgery and a weeks-long recovery across field hospitals and Japan, he returned to the U.S., serving at Fort Campbell and Fort Hood until his Honorable Discharge in 1971.

For his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, Pete was awarded both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

After his service, Pete returned home to work for TDOT, dedicating another 32 years before his retirement.

Pete, thank you for your immense sacrifice during the Vietnam War. Blount County is deeply honored to call you one of our own. Welcome home!

We are saddened to learn of the recent passing of Army Veteran Don Garner.

Don was born and raised in Blount County and attended Everett High School. He left school to serve in the U.S. Army. Don enlisted in 1949 at just 16 years old and was sent to Korea for a short period. The Army discharged him in 1950 upon discovering he was still only 17. Undeterred, Don re-enlisted in 1951 at age 18 and returned to Korea during the Korean War, where he served in combat with the 2nd Infantry Division. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and his unit earned the Distinguished Unit Citation for its service in Korea. Don received his Honorable Discharge in 1954.

It was an honor for our office to present Don with the Korean War Ambassador for Peace Medal in 2020.

Sadly, Don passed away on October 4, 2026, at the age of 93. We were deeply proud of Don and his service in the Army and the Korean War. Our sincere condolences go out to his family.

The 2027 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) has been set at 3.6%, which will raise monthly VA disability compensation for veterans rated 10% or higher. The increase takes effect December 1, 2026, and because VA pays benefits in arrears, the first higher payment will generally land around December 31, 2026 or January 1, 2027.
