On behalf of the local, we would just like to welcome Chief Steve Davis and looking forward to improving and growing our department.
The City of McAlester welcomed Steve Davis as its new Fire Chief during a swearing-in ceremony at the McAlester City Council meeting Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026.
Davis brings 25 years of fire service experience, having spent his entire firefighting career with the Del City Fire Department. He joined the department in 2001 and advanced through the ranks, serving as a firefighter, sergeant, captain and shift commander before becoming Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshal in 2024.
"Steve comes to us from Del City, where he was the assistant fire chief and fire marshal," City Manager Ken Wimer said. "Based on his résumé and the information that we gleaned during the interview process, I am proud to have Steve join our staff."
Davis said his decision to come to McAlester was influenced by conversations with City leadership, particularly Wimer, and a desire to continue making a difference in the fire service.
"I think I was called to be here," Davis said. "It felt right. Everything fell right into place."
Davis holds an associate degree in Municipal Fire Protection from Oklahoma State University–Oklahoma City. His professional qualifications include Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Service Level II Instructor, Fire Officer and CLEET certifications. He has also received numerous recognitions throughout his career, including VFW Firefighter of the Year honors, Mid-Del Tinker 100 Club awards and life safety awards.
Before entering the fire service, Davis operated a residential construction business, gaining experience in building systems and construction safety. He credits encouragement from his father and relatives in the fire service with inspiring his career change. His background also includes extensive experience in emergency incident command, fire investigations, personnel development and community risk reduction.
As McAlester's new Fire Chief, Davis said his priorities include strengthening departmental morale, ensuring firefighters have the resources they need and building stronger relationships with the community.
"My priorities here are to build the best fire department in the state," Davis said. "That looks like excellent morale, great public image, getting the equipment we need, getting the guys what they need to do their job."
Davis also emphasized his commitment to increasing the department's visibility and involvement throughout McAlester.
"We will become a part of this community more so than we have been," Davis said. "We're there to help. We're always there to help."
Outside the fire service, Davis enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and spending time with his family, including his two grandchildren.
