Kinglet beauty 💜 It’s fall migration season, and the woods are alive with birds on the move.

Flycatchers, orioles, tanagers, and warblers who breed in the Brooks Estate are heading south. Juncos, white-throated sparrows, and even the occasional kinglet are arriving from the north to spend winter alongside year-round favorites like robins, nuthatches, chickadees, and woodpeckers. All of them are following routes and instincts that existed long before John Brooks acquired the land in 1660.

Walk the Brooks Estate today and you're under a closed canopy of maple and oak so dense it's hard to imagine it being anything else. But most of the forest is barely 70 years old. The land was field, orchard, pasture and pleasure ground for eight generations of the Brooks Family. Then came Brooks Village, where 200 families of returning WWII veterans lived in one-story homes off Grove Street until 1954. When the village was torn down, the trees started a comeback centuries in the making. Below, the Point of Rocks building, 1885, with its rolling laws and open vistas.
