🎃 Pie pumpkins are everywhere right now! Have you thought about preserving some to enjoy later?
When it comes to home canning, remember this important safety tip: pumpkin and winter squash should be canned in cubes, not mashed or pureed. 🫙
Why? Research has found too much variation in acidity, thickness, and water activity to safely recommend one processing time for mashed or pureed pumpkin.
✅ The safe choice: Can pumpkin in cubes, then drain and puree it when you’re ready to use it for your favorite recipes.

It’s Harvest Time! Thank Goodness for Farmers
We will discover the big part farmers play in bringing us breakfast, lunch, and dinner. How does a seed planted in the Spring end up as a loaf of bread at the grocery store that we use for our peanut butter sandwich for our lunch in the fall? Join us for lots of learning and hands activities as we discover just how grateful we are to farmers!

🫙⚠️ “Dry Canning” Isn’t Canning! ⚠️ 🫙
Seeing “dry canning” tips online? Just because canning jars are used doesn’t mean it’s a safe or recommended canning method. True canning uses specific heat-processing methods to create a safe, shelf-stable product. Dry foods like beans, grains, and nuts don’t require canning, and heating them in jars may trap moisture, affect quality, and does not guarantee safety or sterilization.
✅ Store thoroughly dried foods in airtight containers
✅ Use vacuum sealers or oxygen absorbers for long-term quality
✅ Follow research-based food preservation methods
Stay safe and preserve smart! 🌾🫘🥜

🫙 Canning or Freezing? Choose the Right Jar to Protect Your Food & Your Effort! 🫙
Preserving food takes time, money, and energy—don’t let the wrong jar ruin it all!
✅ Best choice? Mason-type, threaded home-canning jars—they’re specially made for the job. These jars go through annealing, a heat treatment and cooling process that removes internal stress from the glass. The result? A stronger jar with less chance of breakage.
✅ Buying new? Check the box label—it’ll say if it’s safe for canning and/or freezing.
✅ Freezer tip: Use jars with straight sides to allow for expansion. Jars with shoulders or rounded tops? ❌ Risk of breaking!
✅ Always leave headspace when freezing to prevent cracks.
💡 Look for “Freezer Safe” on the label and preserve with confidence!
