NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY

We could show you what we see. But we won’t.
Every year, we recognize the courage, sacrifice, and mental health challenges of our first responders.
We see the photographs. The firefighters carrying children. The police officers responding to unimaginable violence. The paramedics fighting to save lives.
They deserve every bit of that recognition.
But there is another profession at those same scenes. One that is too often missing from the photographs, the recognition, and even the conversations about first responder mental health.
Medicolegal Death Professionals.
We could show you the aftermath of a violent death.
The devastating injuries.
The remains of someone who was once somebody’s child, parent, spouse, or friend.
We could show you the things that stay in our minds long after our shifts end.
But we won’t.
Because those aren’t just photographs of trauma.
They’re photographs of people.
People who deserve dignity, even in death. Families who deserve privacy, even in tragedy.
And that leaves us with a difficult reality.
The very responsibility that prevents us from showing you what we experience also contributes to why our trauma remains invisible.
We aren’t asking anyone to diminish the sacrifices of police, fire, EMS, or dispatchers.
We’re asking that the conversation become big enough to include us.
Because occupational trauma doesn’t begin and end with the traditional definition of a first responder.
Because investigating death carries its own psychological burden.
Because mental health resources, peer support, and professional recognition shouldn’t depend on whether someone wears a badge the public recognizes.
And because you should not have to witness the worst of humanity to believe the people who do.
This National First Responders Day, we honor everyone who answers the call.
But we’re also asking you to remember those who answer when a life has already ended.
You may never see what we see.
But please don’t mistake our silence for an absence of sacrifice.
