This baby barn owl was found in a Miami yard near a fallen tree, most likely the family’s nest. The finders searched the area for siblings or parents but found none, so this orphaned baby came to us.

This patient arrived in rough shape: thin, weak, and dealing with fly strike, which happens when flies lay eggs on a vulnerable animal and the larvae attack the skin. For a nestling this young, that’s a serious combination! 😭

This little one is a fighter, though. A few days into care, they’re still with us and getting stronger every day 🦉

Stay tuned: we’ll be sharing updates on this patient as they recover.

And remember, if you ever find a baby bird on the ground, call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before stepping in. They’ll help you figure out whether it really needs rescue and how you can do to help them 🤍

Every fall, millions of birds migrate thousands of miles across the country. And some of the biggest dangers they face along the way are the lights of our own cities 🌃

During our collab cruise with Tropical Audubon Society, Brian Rapoza, their Field Trip Coordinator, shared how bright lights and glass buildings confuse birds mid-journey, and how many never finish it. His words stayed with all of us long after we got back to shore.
At our hospital, we see these patients come through our doors, and it’s a reminder of how much each one has already been through.

Ana Lima Lights Out Miami program shares easy ways our homes and buildings can give birds a safer path through the night. Learn more through the link in our bio.

We’re so grateful to collaborate with Tropical Audubon Society. Same mission, same skies, same birds worth protecting💙

Betsy B, our ambassador gopher tortoise, stopped by the clinic for a checkup and immediately got to work on a new home…between those 2 pieces of furniture. Progress has been slow.

Burrowing is what gopher tortoises do best. Their burrows can stretch over 40 feet long and shelter more than 350 other species, from snakes to frogs to burrowing owls, which is why they’re considered a keystone species here in Florida. Indoors, though, the soil situation is disappointing.

Checkup went great. The renovation, not so much 🪏🐢

Luna’s been putting in the work, and it shows 🦉💪 Training with Kim builds trust and keeps our ambassador Great Horned Owl comfortable and confident 💕

It’s always the Burrowing Owl 🤷‍♀️

In the early Spring of 2020, as a virus swept the globe, people moved indoors and DeSantis closed the beaches, a tiny seabird began its long migration north. Finally reaching the shores of Deerfield Beach, they found a peaceful, empty, quiet stretch of sand (guarded by police none the less) and set up camp! This once in a lifetime event produced the most successful least tern nesting colony ever in Deerfield Beach and one of the most successful in the state that year.

This is the story of the stewards, the residents, the commissioner, the city and the brave little birds who made this possible.

When two nonprofits dedicated to wildlife and environmental conservation work together 🤝 marvelous things happen!
Our Pelican Harbor Seabird Station x Tropical Audubon Society birdwatching cruise was amazing: like-minded bird lovers and conservation enthusiasts came together for a beautiful evening on Miami’s waters, spotting birds in their natural habitat. Stay tuned, we’ll do it again! 🐦🌅
