SAYING NO TO BLAKEMAN'S RAINY-DAY FUND RAID - "We cannot support a budget that balances the books by unbalancing the future," Delia DeRiggi-Whitton - Nassau County Legislator said before the vote. "This budget takes $43.5 million from our reserves to paper over a structural problem."

During this morning's final budget hearing, Democrats peppered County Executive Blakeman's budget director with questions about a proposed county "gas-tax holiday" to help drivers who are paying more for fuel, staffing cuts to critical departments such as social services and 911 call centers, as well as the rise in spending on private law firms to handle county litigation. The budget is still subject to review by the state-run fiscal oversight group.

Election day shouldn't determine when good ideas get enacted - it is always the right time to do what is right.

The latest on the Blakeman budget boondoggle (2027 edition) - Nassau fiscal watchdog has cited “significant concerns about the County's long-term fiscal outlook" in its review of Blakeman's 2027 budget, citing an immediate fiscal risk of "$60.5 million and $145.5 million" and adding that the county’s reserve funds are insufficient to cover its future risks and liabilities.

The final hearing before the vote is at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola. Newsday

The fiscal watchdog group said officials should not rely on reserves to fund operations.

Long story short - Blakeman's budget is a total mess that empties our rainy-day fund but fails to prioritize the services taxpayers depend on, like social services, 911 operators, police detectives, corrections officers and more. Legislator Arnold W. Drucker lays it out in his most recent Long Island Herald op-ed.

Let the Legislature know your thoughts during the final budget hearing, which is set for 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 at 1550 Franklin Avenue in .
