Morehead City Fire-EMS is trained to calmly respond to emergencies every day, but nothing scares us more than a lack of working smoke alarms in your home and workplace.

As Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 1, and we "fall back" one hour, take the extra time to test all of your smoke detectors or install them in your home if you don't have any. While the time change occurs overnight, we recommend you wait for daylight to test your smoke detectors ... otherwise your family or roommates may think you live in a haunted house this Halloween weekend.

If you live in our jurisdiction and need assistance with your smoke alarms or don't have any, call Morehead City Fire-EMS and we will help you out!

The Morehead City Council officially recognized the retirement of Cowboy, our department's therapy dog, at their Oct. 13 meeting!

Cowboy retired this summer, after eight years of service to Morehead City Fire-EMS, and he was lucky enough to be recognized and celebrated twice - once at our promotional and retirement ceremony at Station 3 in July, and again at this month at City Hall. He was excited to see so many of his friends at the meeting!

Part of his retirement resolution reads:
WHEREAS, Cowboy worked alongside his handler, Assistant Fire Marshal Kristen Davis, and to help maintain a healthy balance between work and home life, Cowboy returned home with Ms. Davis after each shift, allowing him to enjoy time as a regular family dog; and

WHEREAS, over the past eight years, Cowboy has become an irreplaceable member of the Morehead City Fire-EMS family, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion, resilience, and joy for both department personnel and community members. Cowboy will always be the “Goodest” boy.

You can read his full retirement resolution here: https://www.moreheadcitync.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Item/5188?fileID=22008

The first two pictures are from the Council meeting, while his "employee headshot" was from 2023. The July celebration is seen in the final two pictures. Please join us in wishing Cowboy the ultimate retirement life in the Davis household!

No injuries are reported after an electrical fire occurred at Carteret Court Apartments on Oct. 21.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Morehead City Fire-EMS was dispatched to the scene at 113 Rochelle Dr., along with Atlantic Beach and Beaufort fire departments as mutual aid. Everyone in Building N evacuated after flames and smoke were reported in an upstairs unit, where electricians had been working in the complex, according to the initial 911 call.

Crews quickly responded to the scene, ensured the fire was extinguished around 4:15 p.m., and did a thorough evaluation to ensure flames had not spread to the rest of the structure. There is fire and smoke damage to the unit.

Three fire departments responded to a structure fire call at 1510 Fisher St. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when a grease fire ignited in the kitchen.

Crews from Morehead City Fire-EMS, and the Atlantic Beach and Beaufort fire departments responded quickly and were able to knock down the flames. MCFD Station 1, just a block away, arrived on scene immediately and confirmed it was a working fire, and the flames were extinguished within six minutes of the initial call, preventing further damage to the structure. The fire was contained to the kitchen.

The two occupants that were home at the time got out of the house safely, along with a dog, and there are no injuries to report.

Morehead City Fire-EMS Chief Courtney Wade would like to remind everyone if you have a grease fire do not throw water on it, as this will cause it to spread. Instead, try to smother it with a lid on the fire if you can, and exit as soon as possible to call 911.

At the conclusion of the call, Morehead City Fire-EMS installed smoke detectors in the home for the residents.

A Morehead City house sustained extensive damage as a result of a fire at 501 Asby Lane on Sunday, Oct. 18.

A man and his dog were able to escape the blaze, and the resident was checked out on scene by Morehead City EMS. Atlantic Beach and Beaufort fire departments also responded to the fire as mutual aid.

The call was dispatched at 4:42 p.m., and crews worked quickly to knock down the flames, with the fire under control at 5 p.m.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and The Salvation Army has been contacted to assist the resident. No additional details are available at this time.

Thank you to all of our schools for welcoming us during Fire Prevention Week! Since October 1, we’ve reached approximately 4,500 people. That’s an incredible milestone, and we couldn’t do it without our dedicated staff. 🧑🏻‍🚒👩🏼‍🚒

If your child missed us over the past few weeks, join us tonight at Rotary Park for Community Night Out from 6–8 p.m., where our A-Shifter's will be conducting a live vehicle extrication demonstration. We hope to see you there!

Although Fire Prevention Week officially ends soon, we share this message all month - and all year - long!

On Oct. 9, Kindergarteners from Morehead City Primary School visited Station 3 for a comprehensive tour and fire safety lessons, which included a visit from Sparky! They got to see a firefighter in full turnout gear and learn what they sound like when they have their breathing apparatus and mask on; they knocked down cones with a fire hose; were able to hold heavy gear; toured the station and inflatable fire safety house, and more.
