Skagit County Clean Water This page is dedicated to sharing clean water information and encouraging good land stewardship. How big is YOUR footprint?

Skagit County has abundant resources along its marine shorelines that rely on clean water. One of the primary goals of Skagit County's Clean Water Program (CWP) is to ensure the waters are free of pollution. In recent years, areas around the county including the Samish and Padilla Bay basins have suffered severe f***l coliform pollution issues. Bacteria in our rivers, streams, and bays often reach levels too high for safe shellfish harvest and recreation. In addition, farmers are worried about the water quality and the need to provide consumers the assurance that their food products are safe. We at Skagit County Clean Water are dedicated to finding and fixing sources of pollution, and encouraging landowners and homeowner to adopt practices that protect our water quality. Our many partners include Skagit County, the State Departments of Ecology, Health, and Agriculture, the Skagit Conservation District, the Skagit Conservation Education Alliance, the Samish Tribe, the Western Washington Agricultural Association, the Washington State Dairy Federation, EPA, and Taylor Shellfish, among others. To learn more, visit www.skagitcounty.net/csi. Our goal is to keep our local waterways clean by encouraging landowners and homeowners to adopt practices that protect water quality, and sharing local water quality information. Did you know you can protect your neighborhood from flooding just by raking leaves?

Storm drains help keep water off of roads and parking lots when it rains. If storm drains are clogged with leaves, the water has nowhere to go.

Clogged drains can lead to big puddles and even flooded streets. Standing water on roads makes driving very dangerous because it can cause hydroplaning. Flooding can damage nearby yards and properties, too.

Pick up leaves in your yard and in the street to keep storm drains clear. Once you pick up the leaves, you can:

🍂 Contact Northwest Waste Management about yard waste hauling (if you live west of Highway 9).

🍁 Bring the leaves to a commercial composter.

🍂 Compost the leaves at home (Check out some tips for home composting at https://www.skagitcountywa.gov/compost )

🍁 Use a mulching lawn mower to turn the leaves into fertilizer for your yard.
