How does kelp fit into your life? Kelp forests are an important part of our marine environment, but conservation starts with understanding the many ways people connect with them.

The MRC is helping bring a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife kelp conservation workshop to San Juan Island! The workshop will explore how people interact with kelp in their daily lives, from recreation and work to personal experiences and connections with the Salish Sea.

Everyone is welcome, and your perspective matters! You don’t need to be a kelp expert to participate. Whether you spend time on the water, along the shoreline, or simply care about the health of our marine environment, we want to hear from you.

Saturday, November 14 from 12-2:30 at the San Juan Island Grange. Please register or share your story!

At the heart of our marine conservation work is a one‑of‑a‑kind partnership model.

Marine Resources Committees (MRCs) are community-powered groups in each of the seven counties of the Northwest Straits region. They identify local priorities, lead on‑the‑ground projects, and bring community voices directly into marine stewardship.

The NW Straits Commission supports those MRCs with funding, science and technical expertise, coordination, and a regional perspective. The Commission helps make sure local work adds up to meaningful, ecosystem‑wide impact.

Our partners: Tribal governments, state and federal agencies, nonprofits, researchers, and volunteers, help expand the reach and effectiveness of this work. Together, we protect and restore the health of the Salish Sea.

It’s a model rooted in collaboration, community, and science, for over 25 years!

We had a full agenda at our September in-person Commission meeting! Big thanks to our hosts Island MRC and to MRC member Carter Webb for guiding us through an educational on-the-beach tour of Ebey’s Landing kelp bed: a 30.5‑acre site and Island County’s longest‑monitored kelp bed!

Thank you, Commissioner Janet St. Clair, for the warm Island County welcome, and to Washington Sea Grant's Lisa Watkins for a fun "Speed date with a Scientist" where we learned about Sea Grants Molt Search protocols.

Chris Burns has served on the Clallam Marine Resources Committee for over 8 years as a representative for the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe. As a natural resource technician for the Tribe as well as an avid fisherman, Chris has brought valuable insight and help to MRC projects, discussions, and decisions. On the Olympia oyster project, an MRC partnership with Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, Chris provided expert knowledge on Olympia oyster habitat in Sequim Bay. Chris was instrumental in picking best locations for shell placement, a restoration action that helps improve habitat for Olympia oysters. We are so thankful for all of Chris’s help and wish him the best of luck!
