Our hands-on workshops are a window into the 19th century! Learn a new skill, meet fellow history enthusiasts, and take home something you’ve made by hand.

November workshops include:

🥧 Sweet & Savory Pasties Pies - Master the art of pie and dough-making and create delectable pasties (like our celebrated hand-pies!) on a charming 19th-century woodstove. You’ll bring home a selection of your own small pies, along with a beautifully crafted pie plate made by the Museum’s own talented potters.

🏛️ Archival Mount Making - Learn how to create a safe, archival-quality mount to support and protect an object in your own collection. Bring an object you are interested in conserving and make one textile hanger, shoe mount, or hat mount to take home. After the workshop, join Gallery Curator Cassidy Percoco for a tour of the historical costume vault.

🧵 Embroidery - Get started with the basic stitches and go home with a partially completed project, a hoop, needle, and a selection of embroidery threads.

🍪 Springerle - Learn how to stamp, bake, and paint these traditional German cookies and go home with your own beautifully handcrafted Springerle mold and collection of cookies.

Would you prefer it if acquaintances and strangers could tell immediately that you were grieving a loved one?

Death and mourning are a part of every life, and all cultures have created rituals (including Halloween!) to allow people to process loss and to signal it to others. Clothing has long played a role in these traditions.

By the 18th century, western European cultures had established a codified system of morning, with expectations for how long people mourned and what they wore at different stages, depending on their relationship to the person who had died.

The clothing and artifacts pictured here, on display in the John L. Whele Gallery, give a sense of what these mourning rituals looked like in Western New York in the 19th century.

It was so wonderful to have Tonia Loran-Galban (Mohawk, Bear Clan) with us at the Museum for a series of special programs this season, demonstrating traditional Haudenosaunee basket making, including replicating a basket from our own collection.

Thank you to the Rochester Area Community Foundation for their support of this program!
