As the weather gets colder, many homeowners across our community will be using their fireplaces and wood stoves. A properly maintained chimney is an important part of keeping your family and home safe.
Here are some tips to prevent a chimney fire in your home:
- The #1, and most important tip, have your chimney inspected and cleaned regularly by a qualified professional.
- Burn dry, seasoned firewood. Never burn treated or painted wood, trash, or cardboard.
- Never overload your fireplace or wood stove.
- If using a fireplace, always have a screen in front to prevent sparks and embers from escaping.
- Keep anything than can easily burn away from your fireplace of wood stove.
- Make sure you smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly throughout your home.
Warning signs of a possible chimney fire:
- A loud roaring or rumbling sound coming from the chimney.
- A strong, unusual smell of smoke inside or outside your home.
- Excessive smoke coming from the chimney.
- Flames or sparks shooting from the top of the chimney.
- Vibrations of shaking of the chimney or surrounding walls.
- Pieces of burning creosote falling into the fireplace or appearing outside the chimney.
As always, if you suspect a chimney fire, evacuate from your home and DIAL 911 immediately!
Chimney fires can spread quickly and may not always be obvious from inside the home. Regular inspection and cleaning can help prevent a dangerous situation before it starts.
Stay warm and stay safe.
