Halloween can still feel festive and fun if your loved one is now living in a senior community. 🎃

Stop by in a costume or a festive sweater, join an activity together, or take them for lunch.

Ask staff what’s on the community calendar, too. There might be a costume contest or little trick-or-treaters making the rounds.

However you celebrate, enjoy a little Halloween fun together.

For Vincia Gordon, a workday can also include coordinating care for her mom.

The mother of two manages two call centers and a team of 40 while caring for her 92-year-old mother, who has dementia. In a recent Business Insider feature, she shares how home caregivers, family support, and the flexibility to take leave in smaller blocks of time help her balance those responsibilities.

When Vincia needed help exploring care options, she reached out to A Place for Mom.

In many senior living communities, the monthly rent or base rate often includes meals, utilities, housekeeping, activities, and sometimes transportation, which can change how the cost compares to living at home.

Care fees are added based on how much hands-on help a senior resident needs with tasks like bathing, dressing, mobility, and medication management, and are set after a nurse completes a care assessment before move-in. Care fees are reassessed periodically as the resident's needs change.

When you’re comparing communities, always ask for a clear breakdown of what’s included in the base rate, what falls under care fees, and which services are extra. Also, be sure to ask if they charge a one-time move-in fee.

If you're looking for extra guidance, the A Place for Mom team is here to help.

Many seniors receive support through four main types of care: independent living, assisted living, memory care, and home care.

If you’re trying to understand the difference in options, this breakdown highlights what each setting typically offers and who it is best suited for.

The costs shown here are national medians from A Place for Mom’s 2026 Costs of Long-Term Care and Senior Living report. Independent living, assisted living, and memory care figures reflect actual monthly costs paid by residents who moved into communities during 2025, including base rent and care fees where applicable. Actual costs vary by location, floor plan, services, and level of care.

Home-care costs are reported as an hourly starting rate. Monthly cost varies based on the number of hours, schedule, location, and agency pricing.

Care needs can change over time. Consider your loved one’s safety, how much help they need, what family can provide, and the total cost.
