FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEWPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT-CRITICAL INCIDENT COMMUNITY DEBRIEF

The Newport Police Department is releasing a Critical Incident Community Debriefing video concerning the officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 26, 2026.

In keeping with evolving professional practices in law enforcement and in response to requests for body-worn camera (BWC) footage, the department has elected to publicly release a portion of the BWC footage accompanied by narration and other supporting information intended to provide additional context surrounding the incident.

Critical Incident Community Debriefings are becoming an increasingly common practice among law enforcement agencies nationwide. These presentations combine actual incident footage with narration, relevant radio communications, visual references, and other available information to help the public better understand the circumstances surrounding critical incidents and the actions taken by responding officers.

While BWC footage is an important tool for transparency and accountability, video alone does not always convey the full circumstances of an incident. This is particularly true in situations involving rapidly evolving events, split-second decision-making, and information that may not be immediately apparent to someone viewing the footage without additional context.

Our goal in releasing this video is to provide the public and the media with an accurate, factual, and transparent presentation of the incident, allowing viewers to better understand the circumstances and information surrounding our officers' actions. We believe that providing this context is an important responsibility of the department, in circumstances such as this.
The video is not intended to substitute for the formal investigative process, nor should it be interpreted as a final determination regarding the actions of anyone involved. Rather, it is intended to provide the community with factual information currently appropriate for public release while respecting the integrity of the investigative process.

In preparing this presentation, the Newport Police Department consulted with the City Solicitor's Office, the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office, and the City's Public Information Officer. This collaborative approach was undertaken to balance the public's legitimate interest in transparency with the legal and investigative considerations associated with releasing footage of a critical incident.

This is the Newport Police Department's first Critical Incident Community Debriefing video. We believe this approach represents an important step forward in how our department communicates with the community following significant incidents.
We recognize the important role the news media plays in informing the public, and we are providing this video to assist in accurately communicating the circumstances surrounding this incident. We encourage media outlets to review the presentation in its entirety, as the accompanying narration and supporting information are intended to provide meaningful context to the BWC footage.

The Newport Police Department remains committed to transparency, accountability, and maintaining the public trust.

💜 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH 💜

October may be coming to an end, but our commitment to ending domestic violence must continue every day of the year.
Domestic violence doesn't discriminate. It affects people of all ages, genders, races, and backgrounds. It can happen behind any door, in any neighborhood, and to someone you know.

💜 DID YOU KNOW?

▪️ Nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men in the United States have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, along with a related impact.

▪️ Domestic violence isn't always physical. It can include emotional abuse, intimidation, threats, financial control, isolation, and manipulation.

▪️ Children who witness domestic violence can experience lasting emotional and psychological effects, even when they are not physically harmed.

▪️ Leaving an abusive relationship can be one of the most dangerous times for a victim. That's why access to support, resources, and a safety plan is so important.

💜 BREAK THE SILENCE. BREAK THE CYCLE.

Behind every statistic is a real person. A mother. A father. A friend. A coworker. A neighbor.

We all have a role to play in ending domestic violence. Recognize the warning signs, listen without judgment, support survivors, and teach the next generation that love should never involve fear, intimidation, or control.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available.

Halloween is just around the corner, can you believe it!?

🎃🚔 OH MY GOURD! IT'S NATIONAL PUMPKIN DAY! 🎃

Happy National Pumpkin Day, Newport! October 26th is the perfect day to celebrate everyone's favorite orange squash!

Whether you're carving them, painting them, baking them into pies, or turning them into spooky jack-o'-lanterns, pumpkins are officially having their moment! 🍂

🎃 DID YOU KNOW?

Pumpkins are actually FRUITS, not vegetables! 🤯

That's right! Because they grow from flowers and contain seeds, pumpkins are botanically classified as fruits. They're also members of the same plant family as cucumbers, squash, and watermelons!

🚨 A LITTLE PUMPKIN SPICE & SAFETY ADVICE FROM YOUR NEWPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Halloween is right around the corner, and while we're busy making sure our pumpkins are glowing, let's make sure our little trick-or-treaters are visible too!

🎃 LIGHT IT UP! Use battery-operated candles or LED lights inside your jack-o'-lanterns to avoid a frightening fire hazard.

👻 BE SEEN, NOT SCENE! Add reflective tape to costumes and candy bags, and carry a flashlight when walking after dark.

🚶 DON'T GET SQUASHED! Cross at crosswalks, look both ways, and never assume a driver sees you.

🔪 CARVE CAREFULLY! Leave the sharp tools to adults and let the little pumpkins handle the decorating!

🍬 NOW IT'S YOUR TURN, NEWPORT!

We have a very important question...

Are you Team CARVE 🎃 or Team PAINT 🎨?

Or are you one of those people who buys a pumpkin, puts it on the porch, and calls it a day? 😂

👇 Tell us in the comments! Bonus points if you share a picture of your pumpkin masterpiece!

Stay safe, Newport! Keep the pumpkins glowing, the costumes showing, and the scares strictly for Halloween! 👻🧡

🎬👻 LIGHTS, CAMERA... SCREAM! 🔪🍿

Happy National Horror Movie Day! 🎃

October 23rd is National Horror Movie Day, and we're celebrating all things spooky, suspenseful, and downright terrifying!

🎥 DID YOU KNOW?

Horror movies date all the way back to 1896! One of the earliest horror films, Le Manoir du Diable (The Haunted Castle), was created by French filmmaker Georges Méliès. The film was just over THREE minutes long and featured ghosts, skeletons, and supernatural creatures. We've certainly come a long way since then!

🚨 A LITTLE HORROR MOVIE SURVIVAL ADVICE FROM YOUR NEWPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT:

We've all yelled at the TV when a character makes a terrible decision. You know the ones...

🏚️ Exploring that creepy, abandoned building? BAD IDEA.

🌙 Walking alone down a dark alley instead of taking the well-lit route? NOPE.

🚪 Opening the door for a mysterious stranger without checking who's there? HARD PASS.

While these decisions make for great horror movies, they aren't great choices in real life!

Remember: Stay aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and make smart decisions. Leave the scary situations to Hollywood! 🎬

🍿 NOW WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

What's your ALL-TIME favorite horror movie? Are you a fan of the classics, supernatural scares, or good old-fashioned slashers?

👇 Drop your favorite horror flick in the comments! Bonus points if it's one that still gives you nightmares!

Stay safe, Newport, and remember... the only thing scarier than a horror movie is making yourself the main character in one! 👻

We'd like to thank everyone for stopping by and visiting our table at the Newport RI Police Department. We had a blast handing out goodies and playing plinko.

We'd like to extend a very big thank you to the Newport Police FOP Lodge #8 for donating 4 children's bicycles with safety helmets to raffle off. Also, a huge thank you to the anonymous gentleman we met at Walmart that donated the 5th bicycle. That was extremely generous and very much appreciated by all🫶.

There were a lot of very happy visitors and even happier winners of the bike raffle.

Thank you again and we'll see you at the next event!
