NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson spent the 2026 field season conducting oceanographic mapping in the Great Lakes. With the amount of commercial traffic, and the number of marine protected areas in the lakes, it’s important to know how deep the water is and what lies on the bottom. Data collected from these surveys will be used to identify safe navigation routes, spot underwater hazards & more to supersede charts that haven’t been updated since the 19040’s!
