What an American Legion Stands for!!! As some of you know, I am a member of the American Legion and I am very passionate about it.

An organization is only as strong as the commitment of the people who make it up. Membership should represent more than a name on a roster. It should reflect some degree of shared responsibility for the organization's mission and future.

That does not mean everyone must volunteer every week, donate money, or sacrifice their personal life. It means that when an organization needs support, members should consider what they can reasonably do rather than automatically assuming someone else will handle it.

You cannot demand the benefits of a thriving organization while remaining completely indifferent to the work required to sustain it.

There is an important distinction: someone who cannot contribute is not the same as someone who simply will not contribute.

In regards to the American Legion, there is an additional consideration: the organization and it's programs exist to serve Veterans, their families, and the community. Members do not necessarily have to volunteer to appreciate that mission, but the mission itself depends on people being willing to carry it out. - anonymous
