Company 209 and automatic mutual aid were alerted for a structure fire in the McKee zone of North Fayette Township. PD arrived and confirmed a working fire with possible entrapment. With the PD report, 209 Chief requested a second alarm upon the fulfillment of the first alarm.

215 squad arrived on scene with fire showing from the lower floor of the split entry and stretched a single 1 3/4" line into the structure quickly achieving a knock on the fire. Companies on scene conducted a primary search of the structure with no findings, confirming that all human occupants of the structure were accounted for outside. There was unfortunately 1 dog and 3 cats that perished in the fire.

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes and the balance of the 2nd alarm was returned. Units operated on scene for about an hour with overhaul, first arriving companies remained on scene an extended time for the Allegheny County Fire Marshall investigation.

Call #855
14:07hrs

Station 209 was requested by PD to assist with a cat stuck behind the engine of a car. 209 Chief arrived and confirmed confinement. The patient appeared to have fallen into a valley of the engine bay after climbing in to get warm and couldn't self rescue, likely due to the size of the patient. 209 rescue arrived and began feline extraction efforts removing a few components for better access. The patient was freed after about 20 minutes. While we don't usually release names, snowball is doing just fine.

We take every opportunity to hone our skills in technical rescue. This time it was a cat, but similar thought logic and tactics may be applicable in a man vs. machine situation.

Today, our department completed our initial 3-year QRS recertification with EMS West. Due to 20% of our calls overlapping, 7 of our vehicles were inspected and passed without issue.

In the 3 years since reinstating our QRS program, we have answered 1000+ EMS runs, responded to around 50 cardiac arrests, and made a difference in hundreds of people's lives.

A special thanks goes to the group of members that took on the responsibility of ensuring every item was ready for inspection.

17:45hrs

At approximately 1745hrs, members were on Station preparing for our upcoming QRS recertification when one of the firefighters noticed a male walking in the apparatus area inside our station.

Deputy Chief Toth went out to greet the male and was handed an infant. Immediately recognizing the child was choking, Deputy Toth administered back blows initially clearing some of the obstruction while he summoned help from Lieutenant Paramedic Pilewski who administered additional back blows finally allowing the baby's color to return and breathing to become normal.

While the Deputy and Lieutenant were tending to the patient, Lieutenant Spencer contacted 911 for an ambulance response to our station. As of the writing of this, the baby is doing just fine.

The parents, originally headed to Children's by private means, made a decision to stop at the station for assistance. We are grateful that our fire department is staffed, not only by paid township fire inspectors during daylight hours, but live-ins and volunteer staffers as well.

While bringing your emergency to a volunteer station is not ideal, as there is no guarantee of help being there, it is becoming increasily obvious that the public expects help when they come to the fire station, and we are glad to have been there once again.

If this sounds familiar to you it's because on August 4th, 2025 our firefighters saved a different choking baby. 1 year and 6 days ago.

We are grateful for the quick action of the following members:

Deputy Chief Alex Toth
Lieutenant Tyler Pilewski
Lieutenant Chuck Spencer
Firefighter Cory Russi
Firefighter Micah Fitzwilliams
Firefighter John Leitschaft Jr

At 0455hrs station 209 and Mutual Aid were dispatched for a reported fire at the Burger King on Home Drive in the Pointe @ North Fayette. 245 Rescue and Chief were the first arriving units. 245 rescue assumed 1st due engine responsibilities and 245 Chief established command. 245 rescue stretched a line to the Charlie side roof. 209 Engine arrived about a minute later and stretched a line to the kitchen for extinguishment and overhaul. 209 Chief arrived shortly after and, after a face to face, held command throughout the incident.

Mutual aid truck companies laddered the structure and assisted with overhaul and ventilation. The fire was quickly brought under control and the Incident was held to units in scene.

In all, no injuries were reported. Units operated on scene for about an hour.

Thank you to our mutual aid partners for the early morning assist.
