Oregon Food Bank President Andrea Williams put a personal face on the need for food access in Eastern Oregon during the celebration of the future Ontario Community Food Center.
Williams shared the story of her great-grandmother, Francisca, who worked in fields and canneries producing food for others but sometimes didn’t have enough food herself.
“How can someone do everything right and work so hard and still go without?” Williams asked.
For Williams, that question illustrates why the new center is intended to be more than a warehouse. It will be a place where community members can access food while building connection and community.
“When it opens, this place will be where people can get free nourishing food, fresh produce, food that feels like home,” she said.
The future Ontario Community Food Center will serve as a regional distribution hub for Harney and Malheur Counties, while providing direct food assistance and space for community programs.
We’re grateful to the community members, partners and supporters helping bring this vision to life. 💚
