OCFD's Tip for Monday November 2, 2026:
Just a reminder if you didn't put new batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors now would be a good time. Check the date on the back of the detector to see if the smoke alarm is 10 years or less and the CO detector is 7 years or less. If older than these guide lines we strongly recommend replacing.

Frequently asked questions about fall home maintenance
Q: What home maintenance should be done in the fall?

A: Fall home maintenance often includes cleaning gutters and downspouts, inspecting the roof, sealing air leaks, protecting outdoor faucets, servicing the heating system and testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Other common fall home care tips include checking the fireplace or chimney, clearing leaves and preparing outdoor equipment for winter.

Q: What is the most important fall home maintenance task?

A: Some of the most important fall home maintenance tasks are cleaning gutters, inspecting the roof and making sure the heating system is ready for winter. These steps may help reduce the risk of water damage, heat loss and cold-weather system problems.

Q: When should outdoor faucets be winterized?

A: Outdoor faucets should generally be winterized in the fall before the first hard freeze. Disconnect hoses, shut off the water supply if possible and drain any remaining water to help reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

Q: Which fall home maintenance tasks can homeowners do themselves?

A: Many homeowners can handle basic fall home tips such as replacing furnace filters, testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, disconnecting hoses, sealing small air leaks and raking leaves. Tasks like HVAC service, chimney cleaning, roof repair and major tree trimming may be better left to a professional.

OCFD's Tip for Tuesday October 27, 2026:
Fall yard safety involves protecting your body from strain, using power equipment safely, and preventing slips or falls while cleaning up leaves and preparing your property for winter.

Body Mechanics and Raking

• Warm up first: Treat raking and heavy chores like a workout by taking a short walk and doing light stretches beforehand.
• Protect your back: Bend with your knees—not your waist—keep your back straight, and avoid twisting your torso while you rake or shovel.
• Lift smart: Keep heavy bags or debris close to your center of gravity, use your leg muscles to lift, and make more trips with lighter loads rather than overloading bins.
• Pace yourself: Break large projects into short 15- to 20-minute sessions or separate tasks across multiple days. Stay hydrated even in cooler weather.
• Use right-sized tools: Choose ergonomically designed rakes and tools matched to your height to avoid overextending your arms and back.

OCFD's Tip for Monday October 26, 2026:
Home and Fire Safety
Service your heating system: Have a professional inspect your furnace, check for carbon monoxide leaks, and clean your chimney or fireplace before burning wood.

Test alarms: Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace their batteries when you "fall back" for Daylight Saving Time.

Practice safe candle and space heater use: Never leave burning candles or space heaters unattended, and keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable items. Avoid using ovens or stovetops to heat your home.

OCFD's Tip for Friday October 23, 2026:
Grain Bin and Handling Safety
• Lockout and tagout: Always lock out unloading equipment and never enter a grain bin while equipment is running.
• Use harnesses and never work alone: Wear a safety harness attached to a secure line when entering a bin, and keep an observer outside.
• Watch overhead power lines: Keep augers and tall equipment lowered and clear of power lines to prevent fatal electrocutions.

OCFD's Tip for Thursday October 22, 2026:
Equipment and Machinery Safety

• Turn off power: Always stop the engine, set the parking brake, and remove the key before servicing, cleaning, or unclogging a combine or tractor.
• Keep shields in place: Check that all PTO (Power Take-Off) guards, belts, and safety shields are installed and functional.
• Watch for power lines: Look up and maintain a safe clearance when operating tall equipment, grain carts, or augers near overhead electrical lines.
• Prevent fires: Blow dust and dry crop debris off hot combine parts daily, and keep a charged fire extinguisher in the cab.
