🦇 As if the opportunity to job shadow at the zoo wasn't cool already enough, at the Zoo Academy, students also take their core classes onsite! This week, Ms Syke's American Literature class took advantage of the spooky environment in the Kingdoms of the Night to read "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment," a gothic short story by Nathanial Hawthorne, which they cover for their Romantic unit.

🏆 Second graders at Anderson Grove Elementary concluded their unit learning about ancient Greece with Olympic Games! These games were particularly special because the games were planned, organized, and demonstrated by PLCS Education Academy students. This was a fun collaboration, and gave the high school students time to teach and engage the younger students. And the Papillion La Vista South High School Fightin' Titan himself was there to approve!

🌟 Shine Brightly Award Nominee: Lindsay Langford 🌟

We are excited to celebrate Lindsay Langford, Speech Language Pathologist at Papillion La Vista High School! This honor highlights the outstanding contributions of new PLCS educators. Learn more about Lindsay below!

“Lindsay has been a phenomenal addition to our SLP team. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about students. We just had a very involved student meeting and she spoke very professionally and was knowledgeable about how to help support students that are device users as well as multiple other impairments. Way to go Lindsay!”
-Heather Post, Special Services Supervisor

What is your educational background?
I went to Wartburg College where I got my Bachelor's degree in neuroscience. I then attended UNL where I got my master's degree in speech-language pathology.
Why did you choose to come work in Papillion La Vista Community Schools?

I chose to work in PLCS because I grew up in Papillion and was a student in the district from K-12. I had such a wonderful experience as a student as well as in my student teaching. I knew this was where I wanted to be.

How did you know you wanted to become a teacher?
Growing up, I always thought I was going to be a teacher. After taking a high school psychology course and pursuing a degree in neuroscience, I felt like speech-language pathology was the perfect career field for me. It is the perfect mix of my passion for neuroscience and love for education. I get to problem-solve while also teaching my students new skills and enhancing existing skills.

Who is an educator that inspired you?
My principal at Trumble Park Elementary, Mr. Chapleski. Every morning, he stood at the doors and greeted each student by name as we entered the building and made it a priority to know about our lives outside the classroom. He taught me the power of personal connection and inspired me to ensure all of my students feel seen, heard, and valued.

What is your favorite day or event of the school year?
My favorite event of the school year is homecoming week. It is so fun to see everyone go all out for the themes.

What do you want your students to know?
I am always in their corner regardless of if it is speech therapy related or not.

💻 Did you know that there are internship opportunities within Papillion La Vista Community Schools? The PLCS Technology department accepts interns who gain hands-on experience supporting the technology used across the district. Pictured here, this year's interns diagnose and troubleshoot technology issues with student Chromebooks and make the first effort to resolve the hardware and software issues.

The Technology internship is available to seniors interested in a career in information technology who have completed at least one year of IT Jump Start, or have similar hands-on experience.

In addition to the Technology internship, juniors and seniors can intern with the PLCS Communications department. Communications interns gain hands-on experience in the area they are most interested in: marketing and design, photography and videography, or event planning and communications. Students work on real projects that are shared with families, staff, and the community.

Learn more about PLCS internships at www.plcschools.org/future. Applications open November 2!

No leaks, no problem! 💧🔥 Students in Mr. Campbell's Construction classes at Papillion La Vista South High School are diving into their plumbing unit by learning to solder copper pipe joints. After cleaning each pipe, brushing on flux, and heating the fitting with a torch, they applied the solder to the pipe joints to create a tight seal. A water pressure test put their work to the ultimate challenge, proving skills that really hold water!

Today wraps up a month of Pick Me Ups across the district! Dr. Rikli and our assistant superintendents and directors have been busy delivering Wicked Caramel Apples classroom to classroom. This delicious treat is just one small way to say thank you for everything PLCS staff do every day!

It's a PHENOMENAL DAY in Wicked Caramel Apples land!

You may ask why is there a Papillion LaVista Community Schools van in front of our Wicked Caramel Apples shop in Plattsmouth for the past several weeks? Well, as some of you know we have been working on a VERY SPECIAL order during the month of October. We were contacted in September by PLCS asking if we would be interested in working with them to offer a Fall Pick Me Up treat to all their staff. Yes, ALL OF THEM. 😉 After a bit of mind-math and calendar-ing, I knew this was something we HAD to do. You see, we sold our very first apple in a PLCS school, to PLCS staff and families. This was the Community in which we built our business and have had UNWAVERING support through the years! Our kids acted as 'delivery people' when staff ordered from us for coworker and family holiday gifts. So many teachers have gotten end of year treats from our family and OTHERS in the community and then have become loyal and regular customers!

So, despite the INSANELY LONG days and hours, this was something we absolutely had to do to give back to our community. When we moved our physical space to Plattsmouth, we weren't leaving Papillion La Vista behind, we're GROWING our community.

Thank you all, and ENJOY your Wicked treats!

As for me? I have a massage appointment this afternoon. 😉😎🤩

👟🩹 What does it take to become an athletic trainer? It starts with the fundamentals. When they aren't assisting on the sidelines at games, students in the Papillion La Vista High School Athletic Training Academy are practicing two of the most common techniques in sports medicine: ankle taping to help prevent rolls and sprains, and hip flexor wraps to support one of the body’s hardest-working muscle groups. Hands-on learning like this gives students a head start on careers that keep athletes healthy and in the game.

Applications for all PLCS Academy programs and other advanced pathways open next week! Do you know what your options are, and what year in school you need to apply? Learn more about Athletic Training Academy at both high schools and many other options at www.plcschools.org/future.
