Happy heavenly birthday to Omar Grant.
Today would’ve been Omar Grant’s 47th birthday. Instead he was the first person that we know of to fall victim to the death camp that is Al Cannon Detention Center this year.
Over 25 people have died at the county jail due to abuse, officer misconduct and medical neglect in the last decade. At least three recent deaths have been ruled a homicide including Jamal Sutherland, D’Angelo Brown and Mary Brucato.
Despite being the subject of a US Department of Justice investigation, the jail continues to skirt accountability and transparency. In December 2025 the detention center announced it would no longer publicly report deaths from natural causes.
Black people, those struggling with their mental health or with preexisting medical conditions are especially vulnerable when incarcerated at the jail.
Omar Grant was a known diabetic and his family is still unclear what contributed to his death. All we know is that he was found unresponsive at the jail, transported to the hospital and four days later he was dead.
Today and everyday we will continue to fight alongside his family until they receive justice!
