The Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department (PSGVFD) was formed in 1979. The first fire station was located on Paul Smith’s College’s campus next to the maintenance building on the East side. It was a one-story shed with little in it; there was just enough room for the fire truck. As the area grew so did the fire service. Soon the garage the fire department utilized was no longer sufficient for the fire department to conduct their trainings, meetings, and their day-to-day business. So with much help from friends, neighbors and the volunteers the construction of a new firehouse began. In November of 1998, the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Fire Department opened the new station's doors and the department has been at home on Rt 86 since.
