The director of school safety at Peoria Public Schools voiced support for families in response to an increased presence of ICE agents in Central Illinois. Also in response, four community leaders are organizing a donation drive to provide essential supplies to Latino families.

Hagan preguntas. PermΓtannos ayudarles a encontrar apoyo.

TO OUR HISPANIC AND LATINO FAMILIES: YOUR CHILDREN HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE. WE HAVE A DUTY TO PROTECT THEM.

A child’s right to an education is not a favor. A family’s dignity is not subject to public approval. And no parent should have to weigh the promise of a classroom against the fear of separation.

Let us be clear about where Peoria Public Schools stands: your children belong in our schools, and we take responsibility for their safety seriously.

We did not wait for a state mandate to establish an ICE response protocol. We understood our obligation before the state required a policy. Protecting children demands preparation, conviction, and the willingness to act.

Illinois’ Safe Schools for All Act reinforces the right to a free public education regardless of a child’s or their parent’s or guardian’s actual or perceived citizenship or immigration status. It prohibits exclusion from school programs on those grounds and requires procedures for responding to law enforcement requests to enter school facilities.

Rights must have substance. Families deserve to know what stands behind our words.

Our district’s ICE protocol directs staff to:

1. Decline consent to ICE entering school buildings and immediately contact School Safety leadership.

2. Refer warrants, subpoenas, and requests for access to district leadership and legal counsel. An ICE administrative warrant alone does not authorize entry into nonpublic school areas without consent.

3. Protect student information. Staff are directed not to release information without legal review. Peoria Public Schools does not collect or maintain students’ or families’ immigration status.

4. Use protective measures when needed, including a soft lockdown under our response protocol.
We will follow the law and defend the rights it protects. Any legally required access or disclosure must be handled through the appropriate district and legal review.

Our schools must be places where children can lift their heads, exercise their minds, and build their futures. Fear must never become the price of an education.

If your family needs help, contact your child’s principal or our School Safety Department. Reach out. Ask questions. Let us help you find support.

If ICE activity is witnessed or reported around a school, playground, parking lot, bus area, or nearby neighborhood, notify the building principal immediately. You may also call or text the Illinois Federation of Teachers at 309-231-9623 to help connect with the Illinois Federation of Teachers’ Critical Response Team. Provide the location, time, and description, if known. Be clear about what you witnessed and what someone else reported.

To our families: you deserve more than comforting language. You deserve clear procedures, accountable leadership, and adults prepared to stand up for your children. I have let my officers know today that I am PERSONALLY willing to go ALL THE WAY to make sure that is a promise.

Your children belong here. Their rights matter here. And we intend to honor our responsibility to them through action.

Email from one of our amazing school counselors, Brittany Bush:

Hello,

Today we had a student who was really upset because his dad couldn't attend Donuts with Dude due to being incarcerated. He has an amazing relationship with Officer Scott. Once I got him calmed down, I told him to go ask Off. Scott if he would take him to Donuts with Dudes. Here is the result.
