A Week in the Life of a School Board Trustee (Who Is Also a Mom and Has a Full-Time Job)
One of the things people may not realize about serving on a school board is how much of the work happens outside of board meetings. Like many of my fellow trustees, I balance board service with a career, family, and all the activities that come with raising kids. So, I thought I’d share what a typical week looks like!
🥎 Monday: Left work a little early to watch one daughter play softball followed by the other daughter’s softball practice. I was at the fields until 9 p.m., but there’s plenty of multitasking that happens from the bleachers during practice! I read and responded to constituent emails. I also managed to squeeze in a phone call with our board president to discuss some recurring concerns we’ve been hearing.
🏫 Tuesday: Attended our Citizens Facility Advisory Committee meeting at Connally High School. This group is taking a close look at our district’s facility needs and will ultimately develop recommendations for the Board. It’s important work that will help shape the district’s future.
🎺 Wednesday: Attended the Pfestival of Bands! One of my favorite events because I got to see the marching shows from every PfISD high school. Our fine arts students and directors put in an incredible amount of work, and it shows!
📚 Thursday: Had a call with a member of district administration about the Academic Committee, which I chair. We spent time discussing math curriculum and student achievement. Our district’s math performance is below the state average, and improving those outcomes is something I care deeply about. There is important work to be done here.
🏈 Friday: Traded my trustee hat for a concession stand volunteer hat at the football game. Because sometimes supporting our schools means discussing policy, and sometimes it means handing someone nachos. Or doing both simultaneously…
🥎 Saturday: More softball! Between my daughter’s games, I had a 1:1 with a parent to discuss our district’s gifted and talented programs. I appreciate parents who take the time to share their experiences and ideas with me.
And now? I’m watching the UT football game while attempting to build my very first homecoming mum. Wish me luck. I may be in over my head on this one. 😂
Meanwhile, several of my fellow trustees are spending their weekend in Houston attending TxEdCon. I chose to stay home this year because I’ve already completed all my required continuing education without traveling to TxEdCon or the Summer Leadership Institute which are both held out of town. That means no district expense for my conference registration, hotel, or travel. I value professional development, but I also believe in being thoughtful about how we spend taxpayer dollars.
Why share all of this?
Because school board service isn’t just the meetings you see on the calendar or the votes you see on the news. It’s the conversations, the preparation, the committee work, the listening, and the time spent showing up for students, staff, and families.
And for many of us, it happens in between work meetings, softball innings, marching band practices, concession stand shifts, and whatever project our kids have convinced us to take on next.
It’s a busy life, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve our community. Now, back to this homecoming mum. Apparently, there’s no continuing education course for that. 😂
