Halloween may be over soon, but your pumpkins can still have a purpose!

Once you're finished displaying your jack-o'-lanterns and fall pumpkins, consider giving them a second life through composting instead of sending them to the landfill.

Chatham County residents with a current Collection Center decal can bring their unpainted pumpkins to our Food Waste Drop-off Program at four locations:

📍 Bonlee Collection Center
📍 Cole Park Collection Center
📍 Pittsboro Collection Center
📍 Siler City Collection Center

Before dropping off your pumpkins, please remove any candles, paint, glitter, stickers, or other decorations.

Food waste collected through our program is sent to a commercial composting facility, where it can be turned into nutrient-rich compost!

Learn more about our Food Waste Drop-off Program, including accepted materials and locations, at:

www.chathamcountync.gov/foodwaste

The North Carolina Composting Council has also compiled a list of pumpkin drop-off opportunities across the state!

https://carolinacompost.com/nc-pumpkin-drop-spots/

While Halloween may concern itself with vampires, zombies, and ghouls, your pumpkins can also be a part of the undead 😉, as compost that helps revitalize our soils. That's one way to have a second life!

Why should you recycle your batteries?

Proper battery recycling keeps batteries out of the trash and recycling stream, where they can cause fires, and allow valuable materials to be recovered for reuse. Recovering these materials also provides another source of critical minerals and reduces the need to mine for new materials.

And there's another reason to start making proper battery disposal a habit now! Starting December 1, 2026, lithium-ion batteries will be banned from landfill disposal in North Carolina. This is in an effort to keep trucks, landfills, and most importantly, workers safe from errant lithium fires.

Remember that while batteries are recyclable that doesn't mean they belong in your recycling bin! Chatham County residents with a decal can dispose of batteries at all 12 of our Collection Centers, as well as our Main Facility. You can learn more about battery recycling and safe disposal in Chatham County at www.chathamcountync.gov/batteries

And anyone can research other drop-off locations by searching for drop-off locations through The Battery Network. Those interested in researching alternative battery recycling locations can learn more at https://batterynetwork.org/locator/

When batteries are hot or swollen, it is extremely dangerous and should not be ignored. Overheating is a sign of a battery not properly working. Swelling occurs because of a chemical reaction within the battery which is causing gas to try and escape.

Immediately stop using devices that are overheating. Place them in a well-ventilated area away from flammable materials (like a concrete floor) or place them in a bucket with sand or kitty litter. Swollen items must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste event.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) events are a safe way for residents to dispose of their hazardous materials. There are nine HHW events offered throughout the year- typically the third Saturday of the month from March through November. Events are from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm across from the Main Facility at 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312.

Skip the Bin! Turn Your Batteries In!

Your trash and recycling bins are no place for batteries.
Batteries contain heavy metals and chemicals, and when they are improperly disposed of they can cause fires in trash and recycling trucks, at recycling facilities, and even at our Collection Centers.

Help keep our community and waste workers safe by turning your batteries in for proper disposal and recycling.

Learn how to safely dispose of batteries in Chatham County at www.chathamcountync.gov/batteries
