Port Washington Water District It is our mission to provide our customers with an uninterrupted supply of the highest quality water All of our water comes from underground wells.

Here is an at-a-glance look at Port Washington Water District:

All PWWD Water comes from 12 District wells. All groundwater pumped to the distribution system from the operating District wells complies with New York State Department of Health standards for public drinking water. Port water is stored in 2 elevated tanks of 1 million and 250,000 gallon capacities each, and 2 underground tanks of 1 million and 22 million gallons each. PWWD is one of the oldest water districts on Long Island, chartered in 1913. The District has approximately 147 miles of water mains ranging from 4" to 24" in diameter. The District has and maintains more than 1,250 Fire Hydrants throughout the District. The District serves an area of 6 square miles including Port Washington, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, Baxter Estates and parts of Flower Hill and Plandome Manor. Your District maintains emergency connection facilities with the Sands Point, Roslyn and Manhasset-Lakeville Water Districts. Your District serves an average of 9,250 customers with approximately 1.3 billion gallons of water annually. Every gallon of water consumed by District users is recorded by computer and billed accordingly. Unlike New York City, Long Island does not use reservoir water nor have a surface water system.

Yesterday, Port Washington Water District Commissioners and staff gathered with elected officials, members of the Fishbein family, members of the Port Washington community, and fellow Long Island water providers to celebrate the completion and dedication of the District’s $21 million Christopher Morley Park Water Treatment Facility with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The facility was dedicated in memory of the late Peter M. Fishbein, who served as longtime friend and counsel to PWWD and was instrumental in helping the District navigate the complex approval process required to advance the project within Nassau County parkland.

The Port Washington Water District was honored to welcome U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin on August 27 for a special tour of our state-of-the-art Christopher Morley Park water treatment facility.

Administrator Zeldin and members of the EPA team got a firsthand look at the advanced treatment technology PWWD has invested in to protect the long-term quality and reliability of Port Washington’s drinking water. The facility, which serves Wells 8, 9 and 11 and provides approximately 60% of the District’s water supply, includes granular activated carbon (GAC) and advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment systems.

We thank Administrator Zeldin, EPA Region 2 Administrator Michael Martucci and the entire EPA team for visiting Port Washington and taking the time to learn more about our work.

💧 As summer winds down, it’s time to scale back watering! Cooler temperatures mean your lawn needs less water. Seasonal adjustments like these help conserve water and keep your landscape healthy:

💧🏊 Have a Pool, Hot Tub or Spa? Make Every Drop Count!

Pools and spas are a great way to cool off and relax, but a few simple habits can help you enjoy them while conserving our community’s water supply.

đź’§ Keep it covered. Use a properly fitted cover when not in use to reduce water lost through evaporation.

🔍 Check for leaks. Regularly inspect pumps, plumbing, filters and equipment. Even a small leak can waste water over time.

🌊 Avoid overfilling. Maintain the proper water level to reduce unnecessary overflow and splashing.

♻️ Drain only when necessary. Proper maintenance and filtration can help extend the life of the water and reduce unnecessary draining and refilling.

📊 Monitor your water use. Use MyPWWD to track household water consumption and identify unusual increases that could signal a leak. Learn more: https://pwwd.org/mypwwd/

🏡 Planning a new pool? PWWD requires permits and safety installations for both in-ground and above-ground pools. All pools must also have a recirculation and filtering system and a double check valve installed at the meter on the incoming water service. During the summer, when demand on our water system is at its highest, every gallon conserved makes a difference.

Enjoy the water. Conserve the water. Do It For Port. 💙💧

đź’§ August is National Month!

Protecting the quality of our water is a shared responsibility, and it starts with protecting the source.

Here at the Port Washington Water District, we’re investing in the future of our community’s water through our Capital Improvement Program, with projects designed to strengthen system resiliency, modernize critical infrastructure and ensure the high-quality water our residents rely on every day.

That includes advanced treatment systems to address emerging contaminants, replacement of aging infrastructure, upgrades to pumps, electrical and control systems, improvements to water storage facilities, and projects that enhance water pressure and overall system performance.

You can help protect water quality at home, too:
đź’§ Use fertilizers and lawn chemicals responsibly and prevent runoff
đź’Š Never flush unused or expired medications
🧹 Sweep driveways and walkways instead of hosing them down
🛢️ Properly dispose of paint, motor oil, antifreeze and household chemicals
🌧️ Collect rainwater for use in your garden
🌿 Choose native and water-wise landscaping to reduce irrigation needs

Small actions at home, combined with long-term investments in our water infrastructure, can make a meaningful difference in protecting Port Washington’s sole-source aquifer and our water supply for generations to come.

This National Water Quality Month, help us . 💙💧
