Turns out, Iowa has quite a thing for bicycles. π²ππΌ
Bicycling is part of Iowaβs economy, our communities and our culture. Weβve got the data to tell the story:
π² An estimated 900,000 Iowans ride annually.
π° Bicycling and trail use contribute an estimated $1.4 billion annually to Iowaβs economy, supporting 21,000+ jobs.
π Recreational cycling reaches all 99 counties.
π³ Iowa has 101 rail-trails spanning 1,009 miles, plus 100+ mountain bike trail listings.
π
More than 430 Iowa cycling events were listed on BikeIowa.comβs calendar in 2025. Thatβs an average of 36 per month, more events than there days in a month!
π Iowa ranked 3rd nationally per capita for Octoberβs Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day, with 100+ schools participating.
Iowans on bikes make a difference. Their miles have helped raise millions for cancer research, mental health services, human trafficking prevention and other causes.
You donβt have to ride a bicycle to benefit from bicycling in Iowa.
At the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, weβre working to make Iowa the best place to ride a bike. Safer places to ride. Stronger communities. More opportunities for everyone.
πΈ Letβs put some faces to those facts. Drop a photo of yourself riding in Iowa, or leave a comment telling us your favorite Iowa place to ride. Small towns, city streets, trails and gravel roads. Show us your Iowa ride!
