Did you know SC Johnson started as a hardwood flooring company?
In 1886, Samuel Curtis Johnson purchased a small parquet flooring business in Racine, Wisconsin, with just four employees.
In those early days, Samuel spent five days a week traveling to sell flooring for homes, churches, hotels and public buildings. On Saturdays, he returned to Racine to process orders and manage the business.
When customers asked how to care for their new floors, Samuel began experimenting with wax. In 1888, he developed Johnson’s Prepared Wax, the company’s first major product beyond hardwood floors.
These early advertisements show how the business evolved, offering powdered wax for dance floors, floor restorers and polishing brushes. They also show how SC Johnson reached customers through retailers, illustrated catalogs and instructional pamphlets.
By 1898, sales of floor wax, finishes and wood fillers had surpassed sales of the flooring itself.
As we celebrate 140 years in business, take a look at some of the early products and advertisements that helped shape the family company we are today!
