This was a message sent to our department from a local Rolla resident recently:

"I just wanted to post a special thank you to two officers and the dispatch clerk from the Missouri S&T Police department yesterday with helping me with a flat tire and my disabled wife to be safe and well and go above and beyond what I thought their duties were I don't have their names but I just wanted to send this out so everybody knew that the campus has some special police on their Police department they didn't have to but they did go out of their way to help us and I just wanted to thank them very much."

We are proud to serve the Missouri S&T campus and to be among the amazing first responder agencies to serve this very special community.

There is a new scam going on right now in our community. The scammer will call you or leave you a message noting that they represent a local law enforcement agency. They will tell you that you have a warrant for your arrest and to clear the warrant you have to pay a fine. They will then instruct you to get a prepaid credit card and give them the information to withdraw funds from the card.

If you receive a call from anyone representing a law enforcement agency, get the person's name and phone number and then hang up. Find the phone number for the agency yourself and verify. In the case that was forwarded to our department, the caller indicated that they were with the Phelps County Sheriff's Department and were Sergeant Davis. The person that they called looked up the department's actual phone number and determined that there was no Sergeant Davis and the phone number that was used to leave the message was not associated with the department.

Law enforcement will never call you and demand/accept payment for any outstanding debt over the phone. If in doubt, contact or visit your local law enforcement agency.

University Police Officers conducted a basic automobile safety course yesterday afternoon in the Residential Common's courtyard area. This training session was in partnership with campus Residential Life staff. Students learned how to change a tire, how to jump start a car safely, how to use a jump box, and other key basic vehicle safety activities. The University Police will help with tire changes, jump starts and vehicle unlocks, anywhere in Rolla for campus members, including students, staff and faculty. The University Police team thoroughly enjoy these types of engagement opportunities. Officer Grant Shade is pictured working with the students. Also present was Officer Anthony Giacolone.
