Did we catch the shadow figure? 👤A dark, human-shaped silhouette has been reported and photographed along the 165-foot, 219-step spiral staircase and interior white brick walls of the St. Augustine Lighthouse tower! Did we catch it on a Dark of the Moon Ghost Experience?!

Many believe the shadow figure is the spirit of Peter Rasmusson, who served as the head lighthouse keeper from 1901 to 1924 (the longest tenure of any keeper at the Light Station)!

The St. Augustine Lighthouse has been featured on Ghost Hunters, the Travel Channel, CNN, BuzzFeed Unsolved and many other TV shows.

Ghost Tours are available every week, including four tours on Halloween!

NEWEST EXHIBIT! Within These Walls: Duty & Daily Life at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum!

This brand-new four-room exhibition in the 1876 Keepers’ House explores the human side of maritime history.

Within These Walls: Duty & Daily Life invites visitors into four immersive rooms, exploring the
daily routines of lighthouse keepers, the realities of raising a family at a Light Station, the
evolution of the lighthouse service, and a heartfelt tribute to the dedicated men and women
who kept the beacon burning.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum brings the stories of multiple lighthouse
keepers together. Made possible through extensive research into the keepers’ personal lives,
service records, and daily challenges, this landmark exhibition shines a new light on the individuals behind the beacon.

From the Museum Collections:
148 years ago, the Keepers’ House at St. Augustine’s original lighthouse (the Old Spanish Watchtower) met an unfortunate end when a storm toppled the building into the ocean.

The “storm” that brought down the keepers’ house was most likely the 1878 Haiti-Florida Hurricane. The Category 2 hurricane had primarily stayed along Florida’s west coast before making a sharp turn east. The storm was severe enough that the city’s statement, reported in the Sunland Tribune, declared that “the storm was the worst that has ever been here.”

The keepers’ log gives us a firsthand account of what happened that day:

“Very Stormy Weather. Tide washed the foundation from under the dwelling of the Old Lt. House and the building tumbled down into the River. The high Wind drove the rain in through the windows of the Tower. One of the Window fastenings gave way and Seven paines of glass were broken”

One storm, one destroyed keepers’ house, and a rather memorable entry in the lighthouse logbook.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum Heritage Boatworks is a wooden boatbuilding program overseen by the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program and carried out by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Boatbuilders are on site from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday.

Wooden boatbuilding thrived in St. Augustine for over four centuries until it was finally supplanted by fiberglass construction in the early 1980s.

Heritage Boatworks is committed to keeping this maritime tradition alive and relevant by constructing living replicas of vessels once common in the waters of St. Augustine, northeast Florida and in coastal areas of the United States.

The beautiful spiral staircase at the St. Augustine Lighthouse has eight landings on the way up … and guests can stop on each one to catch their breath!

The wider staircase was designed in the late 1800s to accommodate guests who would visit Anastasia Island by boat from St. Augustine’s historic district. At that time, women’s fashion included hoop skirts, which the would fit on the wider staircase.
