The Engineering and Mechatronics programs at the Burton Center for Arts and Technology designed and built two custom costumes around wheelchairs for Roanoke County students with disabilities. Each class met with the families to listen and learn what each child wanted as a theme. One family chose an Alien theme, and the other chose NASCAR. Both solutions incorporated frames made of PVC pipe and custom 3D-printed connectors. They each lit up with LED light strips featuring distinctive color schemes. The NASCAR costume used a bubble machine for exhaust, while the Alien spaceship featured a smoke machine and laser-engraved windows. QualiChem of Salem partnered with the Burton Center to provide sponsorship and support for the projects. The event, held at Roanoke College on Saturday, October 24th, was the 10th Annual Hallowheels fundraising event hosted by Childrenโs Assistive Technology Service (C.A.T.S.)! The familiesโ were thrilled with the studentsโ creations. The students truly enjoyed using their CAD and fabrication talent and found the project extremely rewarding!
