The 2026 Public Safety Citizens Academy is a wrap. These citizens chose to spend their Tuesday evenings, since February, with Roanoke County Public Safety Departments getting a behind the scenes look at what we all do to help protect and serve the community.

Congratulations to all of them for completing this Academy and giving us the opportunity to be transparent with what we do day in and day out.

If you would like to join next years PSCA please reach out to Officer Forehand with the Roanoke County PD at [email protected]

Deputies from the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office had the honor to be in the presence of a powerful moment Monday afternoon. William Byrd’s group, Help Save the Next Girl, brought in guest speaker, Crystal Sales, to share the story of her daughter. Katelyn Lyon’s name, story, and impact will be remembered by a new group of people thanks to the courage of her mother coming to share her story.

We also were able to hear the importance of the judicial system and touch on the effects of psychological paired with physical abuse from former Commonwealth Attorney, Wes Nance. This team delivered Katelyn’s story with care and respect to highlight how we can truly help save the next girl.

Thank you to William Byrd for having us again this year, we cannot wait for our spring class!

From 10 AM until 2 PM today we participated in the DEA National Drug Take Back Day at Roanoke Counties Fire Station 1. There was a great turnout of citizens dropping off unused prescription meds to be properly disposed of by the DEA.

Between collection today and through our permanent collection sites, 266.7 lbs of unused meds were given to the DEA for proper disposal.

Please reach out if you need to dispose of unused Meds or come see us at station 1 in April at the next Drug Take Back Day.

Earlier this week we helped welcome athletes/students from the Roanoke area to William Fleming High School for the 2026 Special Olympics Big Feet Meet.

We had as much fun as the students that competed at our station.
