CASA of Monterey County Learn how you can be a CASA! What do CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) do for children in the foster care system?

CASA of Monterey County's mission is to train and support community volunteers who advocate for abused or neglected children placed in foster care, upholding the children's rights while pursuing a safe and permanent home. Understand and Support
How the child is doing: in their placement, in school, with friends and activities. Encourage
Introduce a child to healthy activities and model problem-solving skills. Empower
Encourage a child’s self expression; validate their feelings, fears, and beliefs. Keep Promises
Visit regularly and follow-up on what is important for the child. Make Connections
Find people who can be lifelong connections for the child. Promote Success
Work with teachers, schools, and foster parents for academic success. Report
Provide the Judge with detailed information with which to make decisions. A trained volunteer advocate (that might be you) reviews the case information and consults with their Advocate Supervisor as well as the other professionals on the team (social workers, attorneys, foster parents, group homes) to develop a case plan focusing on the priority issue for the child.

In August, our advocates gathered at Other Brother B**r for a continuing education session focused on supporting transitional age youth (TAY), ages 14+. This training gave our CASAs a space to share real experiences and brainstorm strategies with fellow advocates doing the same vital work.

Our annual ofrenda is a special way to remember and reflect on our CASAs who are no longer with us and the meaningful contributions they made to our community. This beautiful display also pays tribute to lost friends and family who are never forgotten.

“I am a Traveler and a CASA.” ✈️ Our volunteers are retirees, full-time professionals, parents, and frequent travelers. Showing up for a child in foster care doesn't require pausing your life—it’s about consistently creating space for a young person in your community.

If you've ever thought you were too busy to step up, Sylvia’s story proves there’s room to make a lasting impact.

In response to our recent post about helping a CASA youth begin the next chapter of their life, many of you have asked how you can pay it forward and support the next young person in need.

Huge thank you to our thoughtful friend, Nate, at Ameri-Cal Floral for his extremely generous donation of Marigolds for our annual ofrenda display at CASA.

We can't wait to share with you the final display honoring those that we have lost and continue to love. 💛

Recently, we provided a CASA youth with a starter kit as she had just received the keys to her first apartment. 🏠🔑

We know costs for new items like kitchen utensils, bedding, cleaning supplies, and many other things add up quickly. We are grateful to be able to help this youth begin the next chapter!

A few times a year, our CASAs gather for Book Club to dive into books on relatable, thought-provoking topics—and enjoy some great food while they're at it. 📚☺️ Recently, our CASAs came together to discuss Undoing Drugs by Maia Szalavitz.

Gatherings like this give our volunteers a space to share perspectives, learn from each other's experiences, and build strong connections. 🫂

Meet Ariella! She has been a volunteer with CASA of Monterey County since August of 2022, just marking her four-year anniversary as an advocate. 🥳

Since college, Ariella knew she wanted to get involved and learn more about the foster care system. She lived in India for five months and worked for a Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO) called Foster Care India.

Since becoming an advocate, Ariella has served two teenagers, and been instrumental to their respective support networks. She says both had different personalities, interests, and needs-
they each taught her a lot about authenticity. Ariella recognizes how much she appreciates who the youth are as individuals and aims to tailor outings to reflect that. Thank you, Ariella, for your continued dedication!
