San Diego Hunger Coalition leads coordinated action to end hunger in San Diego County supported by research, education, and advocacy.

A new federal ‘public charge’ rule took effect on September 18, expanding the public benefits — including food assistance programs like CalFresh — that can be weighed against immigrants applying for green cards or legal status.

"Access to three nutritious meals a day is a basic right — not a bargaining chip. This rule has the potential to push eligible families away from food assistance out of fear, not need,” said SDHC CEO & President Alondra Alvarado in response to the policy that went into effect last month.

In September, California and 20 other states filed a lawsuit to block the changes. We will continue monitoring this policy and its effects on our local community as it develops.

Just in time for the upcoming election, here’s a voter guide to help you navigate what’s on the ballot this season 🗳️

Put together by the Basic Needs Coalition — an alliance of local nonprofit organizations, civic leaders, advocates, and community partners united around a share belief: affordable housing, healthcare, food security, childcare, and homelessness prevention are inseparable. No San Diegan can truly thrive when any of these needs goes unmet.

This guide covers all qualified statewide ballot propositions on the November 2026 ballot, plus one local measure — the San Diego County Health & Safety Act (Measure B). It does not include candidate endorsements or other local measures.

Important Upcoming Dates:
⭐️ October 19 - One week away! Last day to register to vote or update your registration address.
⭐️ November 3 - Election Day! Polls open throughout California from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
