If military life doesn’t live up to the advertising, you can’t bring your enlistment agreement back to the recruiter for a refund.

NNOMY is working with War Resisters League to distribute palm cards at high schools that will direct youth to online resources that they can access on their mobile devices. This information and additional links will assist them in answering the questions they will have about the realities of military enlistment that they will not hear from military recruiters, and direct them to non-military alternatives to achieve their future educational and career goals.

The "Answering Tough Questions” category is focused on essential questions about military recruitment, military service, the ethics of organized violence, and human survival in war. Each question is something a young person might ask or encounter realistically from a military recruiter, a teacher, a family member, a peer, or even a counter military recruiter activist — and each answer is concise, factual, and ethically grounded, without drifting into fear‑based messaging.

I watched the fall of Kabul, along with billions around the world. A tear formed in eye as desperate civilians tried to flee their country, only for most to be left behind. I saw the last American soldiers board their flights, returning home not in victory, but in defeat. I had no words. History was rhyming before our eyes. It was Vietnam all over again.

The "Military Programs and recruitment methods in the Schools" webpage will describe the various programs and recruiting methods of the Department of Defense, some that have been in existence for some time and others recently formed. Many of these strategies for military recruitment, old and new, have been expanded in recent years and now a new trend of public military academies has emerged to target poorer youth in communities classified as "at risk" for crime and imprisonment. All the following programs and methods are generally funded under the Department of Defense's recruitment budget even though the DoD claims that these programs, like ASVAB testing and JROTC, are not for recruitment purposes.

The U.S. funding of Israel’s war in Gaza has given students across the country a reason to question the presence of military programs in their high schools.

Many do not want to participate in a service that they believe is tied to a government complicit in “ethnic cleansing” and that has caused the deaths of many innocents, including non-combative women and children.

The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) is providing a packet of resources to inform those who wish to act against military programs that serve the purpose of military recruitment in schools.

Many good people join the military because they want to make a difference, to serve others. This is a great goal, but after joining, you may find out that it’s not the kind of service you expected, and then it would be too late to change your mind.

Before enlisting, think carefully about what it means to be a soldier for eight years.

Every member of the military, from the medic to the mechanic, is trained to fight and to kill, and the ongoing conflicts prove that fighting and killing can begin very suddenly. You may enlist to get job training or money for college, but eventually you may be faced with war.

You owe it to yourself to think seriously about when you believe it is justified to kill another person.
