We honor the lives of Mariya Jackson (3/31/2026) and Dannielle Spillman (4/13/2026).
We honor the life of Mariya Jackson (3/31/2026), a brilliant and deeply loved member of the community. Known for her warmth and commitment to uplifting others, she showed up with purpose, both personally and through her work in direct service. Her resilience, and dedication to community left a lasting impact on all who crossed her path. She had so much life ahead of her. Her legacy will continue to live on through the people and community she helped build.
We remember Dannielle Spillman, a beloved trans elder whose life touched so many in San Francisco. Known for her warmth, generosity, and deep love of music, she built community wherever she went. She showed up with kindness, style, and a spirit people won’t forget. She deserved safety and dignity. Instead, we mourn her loss and honor her legacy by continuing the fight for a world where trans elders are protected, valued, and able to live fully.

The Office of Transgender Initiatives is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of one of our most fearless trans elders, Stonewall veteran and life-long advocate Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.
From the streets of San Francisco, to the deepest trenches of the South, she fought for those who most others had forgotten and blazed a trail that enables us to do the work we do today.
Our love goes out to her family and all those who were lucky enough to know her.
Rest in Power We love you.
