HALLOWEEN SAFETY

Halloween day is here, and your CHP San Francisco Area personnel wants everyone to have a fun and safe holiday celebration!

With trick-or-treaters of all ages, families, and Halloween festivities taking place within our communities, we want to remind motorists to slow down, stay alert for pedestrians, and be cautious especially in residential neighborhoods.

Here are a few safety reminders for everyone:

For drivers: Please slow down, eliminate the distractions, and be alert for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.

For parents: Make sure all costumes provide visibility especially at night, carry flashlights, glow sticks, or some form of illumination, and remind children to use crosswalks rather than stepping between parked vehicles.

For the trick-or-treaters: Stay on sidewalks when available, look both ways before crossing the street, and never assume a driver sees you. Make sure you make eye contact with the driver of a vehicle before making an attempt to cross a street.

For the adults celebrating: If your Halloween plans include consuming alcoholic beverages, plan ahead for a sober ride before consuming your first drink. Please don’t take the risk of driving a vehicle while impaired from either alcohol or drugs.

Earlier this week, Captain T. McCollister and command personnel proudly welcomed three new officers recently assigned to your CHP San Francisco Area office.

After previously completing twenty-six weeks of intense training at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento, these newly appointed officers from CTC I-26 are ready to hit the road and begin their field training. We wish these officers success as they begin their career with the California Highway Patrol.

This week is Red Ribbon week, which is observed annually and is the nation's oldest and largest drug awarenes program that focuses on drug use prevention.

Your CHP San Francisco Area and CHP Redwood City Area personnel took time to speak with the students at an elementary school in South San Francisco, CA earlier today. It is never too soon to talk openly with kids about the dangers and risks of drugs. The students made a pledge to live drug free and to be healthy.

We also encouraged the students to "Be Safe and Be Seen" during this upcoming Halloween holiday weekend, as they received CHP stickers, reflective slap bracelets, and CHiPper activity books.

We enjoyed our time answering questions and interacting with both the students and faculty members, receiving high-fives and hugs with CHiPper, and having the students get a first hand look at the different patrol vehicles we use each day.

RED RIBBON WEEK ✨

This week communities across California are participating in Red Ribbon Week, promoting drug-free lifestyles and healthy decision-making.

The California Highway Patrol recognizes the importance of this message, especially as it relates to roadway safety. Driving under the influence of any substance, whether it be alcohol, illegal drugs, or even certain medications, endangers lives and is never worth the risk.

We encourage everyone to make smart choices and to speak up when they see someone about to make a dangerous decision.

Your choices matter. Choose safety. Choose responsibility.

Earlier today, California Highway Patrol San Francisco Area personnel responded to a call for service on I-80 eastbound (San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge) involving a person in distress.

We would like to thank the San Francisco Fire Department, San Francisco Police Department, the United States Coast Guard, and Caltrans Bay Area District 4 personnel who responded to the area to assist in a positive resolution to this incident. There were no injuries during this incident.

Upcoming I-80 westbound (San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge) freeway closure this weekend.

If you have plans to travel to San Francisco, CA, this weekend, please be aware of a full freeway closure beginning at I-80 westbound at the 5th Street off-ramp through 15th Street.

The full I-80 westbound closure will begin on Friday, October 23, at 11 pm, through Monday, October 26, at 6 am. All westbound I-80 traffic will be diverted off the freeway at the 5th Street off-ramp as Caltrans Bay Area District 4 oversees roadway repairs in the area. CHP San Francisco Area personnel will be on-duty throughout the closure.

Expect heavy traffic and significant delays throughout the weekend. If possible, utilize public transit or avoid the area. Also utilize the Golden Gate, San Mateo, and /or Dumbarton Bridges as alternative routes of travel into the city of San Francisco.

NATIONAL MOVE OVER DAY 🇺🇸🚨

Every day, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, tow truck operators, and roadside workers put their safety at risk while assisting others on our highways.

On October 13, two CHP officers were injured when a vehicle entered a closed section of I-80 in Solano County and struck their patrol vehicle.

Moving over and slowing down isn’t just a courtesy, it’s the law.

⚖️ MOVE OVER LAW:
Under California Vehicle Code Section 21809, drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, highway maintenance vehicles, or other vehicles displaying qualifying warning lights or devices must:

🚔 MOVE OVER: Safely change lanes to provide space when approaching and passing in an adjacent lane, when safe and practicable.

⚠️ SLOW DOWN: If changing lanes is unsafe or impracticable, reduce your speed to a reasonable and safe level.

Behind every flashing light is someone who deserves to make it home. So please remember to stay alert and remain attentive to changing traffic conditions.
