A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.
From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.
Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.
Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, members of your CHP San Francisco Area teamed up with the Scouts of America, San Francisco Fire Department, San Francisco Sheriff’s Office members, other first responders, and several community organizations to co-host our annual youth bicycle safety rodeo near Stonestown Galleria, in San Francisco, CA.
CHP and San Francisco Sheriff’s Office bike patrol officers worked with youth attendees to make their way through a challenging obstacle course and then a group ride on the streets to apply their safety skills in live traffic. Free bicycle helmets were fitted and passed out to those who came unprepared and basic bicycle checks and tune-ups were conducted by bicycle mechanics at the event. This event was a great opportunity for the kids and their families to interact with first responders and learn important information about bicycle safety, while also testing their abilities and giving them a place to learn the rules of the road.
Bicycles and motorists have to share the roads and be aware of each other. Let’s ensure the safety of each other by following the rules of the road and being focused while also staying vigilant. Ride smart, ride safely and always wear your helmet to minimize serious injuries.
👏 Thank you to all the first responders and community partners who came out and supported the event in one way or another. Your participation aided in the success of this event and we appreciate all of you and your assistance during the event.

Your CHP San Francisco Area personnel held a Driving Under the Influence (DUi) sobriety and driver license checkpoint during this past weekend on Friday, May 8, 2026, in San Francisco, CA, and we were joined by personnel from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, who also took part in the checkpoint.
The goal of these checkpoints is to ensure safe passage for each and every motorist and removing intoxicated or unlicensed drivers from our roadways. During this checkpoint, CHP and San Francisco Sheriff’s Office personnel screened 318 vehicles. Of those 318 vehicles, 11 drivers were contacted who displayed possible symptoms of impairment. Of those 11 drivers, 6 individuals were placed under arrest for being under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, drugs, or a combination thereof, one of which was under the age of 21 years old.
The law is clear. Driving under the influence of any substance is illegal and will result in an arrest for DUI. Removing impaired drivers from our roadways has always been and will continue to be one of our primary objectives to keep our roadways safe. With so many alternative choices to get to and from your destinations, why take that chance of getting pulled over, or worse, potentially hurting yourself or someone else. Make the right choice and don’t drink and drive!
