From the beaches of Santa Cruz to the majesty that is Hearst Castle, from the quaint streets of Solvang to the national pride that is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the CHP's Coastal Division includes some of the most familiar scenes in the United States. The Central Coast's 325-mile landscape on the Pacific Ocean also defines the boundary of Coastal Division's area of responsibility. From the seasonal rain and fog to the summertime traffic influx, Coastal Division's transportation system presents many difficult and ever-changing traffic safety issues. These challenges are met daily by Coastal Division's 11 Area offices, one resident post, two commercial vehicle inspection facilities and three communication/dispatch centers. These facilities contain nearly 700 uniformed and non-uniformed employees who share a unified commitment: enforcing safety laws to save lives, servicing the motoring public, and to provide security to state employees and property. While the patrol officer remains the foundation of the CHP, additional support from various units within Coastal Division augment the CHP's life-saving mission. They are the Commercial Vehicle Unit, Motor Carrier Unit, Investigative Services Unit, Air Operations Unit, Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), Recruiting, and Public Affairs. These units ensure the safe and efficient operation of commercial and regulated vehicles, recover stolen vehicles and apprehend those responsible for the thefts, provide ongoing education and training of CHP personnel, and implementation of homeland security measures. In addition to airborne traffic enforcement and management, Air Operations provides assistance with search and rescue, criminal surveillance, pursuit intervention, aerial photography, blood and organ transportation, homeland security, and emergency transportation of personnel and equipment. The MAIT Unit conducts in-depth investigations and analyses of major traffic collisions using the physics of collision analysis and reconstruction. The Recruitment Program actively promotes the philosophy that the vitality of the CHP depends upon the successful recruitment of qualified personnel. Finally, public affairs is responsible for developing, coordinating, educating and assessing the impact of traffic safety and outreach programs and assisting the CHP in evaluating public perception of departmental activities.

This winter is going to be a challenge for all of us. Please help the Buellton CHP keep the roadways safe by preparing your vehicle (check tires, wiper blades, lights) for seasonal challenges, and no matter where you are headed be sure to:

- Slow down and wear your seatbelt every single trip.
- Pay attention to weather forecasts.
- Maintain an emergency kit in your vehicle.
- Obey signage and do not drive through flooded roads during a storm. A vehicle can be swept away in as little as 6 inches of water.
- If you are traveling through canyons or an area where there are burn scars from recent fires, be aware of the possibility of sudden debris flows during heavy rainfall and plan an alternate route.

10/22/26 6am, Commuters be prepared for wet roadways and possible flooding for your travels within SLO County today. Allow more time for travel, slow down, and allow for a greater following distance.

Key reminders:
• Slow down and increase following distance.
• Turn on your headlights when your wipers are in use.

COASTAL CALIFORNIA – With forecasts predicting a strong El Niño weather pattern this winter season, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Coastal Division is urging residents to take proactive measures to prepare for heavy rainfall, potential coastal flooding, and hazardous roadway conditions.

“With El Niño bringing severe weather our way, keeping our coastal communities safe is our highest priority,” said Mike Alvarez, Chief of the CHP Coastal Division. “Preparation starts today, both at home and on the road. These storms can create sudden, dangerous driving conditions, so we're asking everyone to stay alert and slow down, so we all make it home safely.”

The CHP Coastal Division will be actively monitoring highway conditions and collaborating with allied local agencies and Caltrans to respond to weather-related incidents. To ensure safety on the roads, the CHP recommends the following wet-weather driving tips:

Reduce Your Speed: Posted speed limits are designed for ideal, dry conditions. Reduce your speed significantly when roads are wet to maintain control of your vehicle.

Increase Following Distance: Stopping distances increase drastically on wet pavement. Leave extra space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you to provide ample time to react and stop.

Inspect Your Vehicle: Before the heavy rains begin, ensure your tires have adequate tread and are properly inflated. Replace worn windshield wipers and check that all vehicle lights are functioning.

Turn on Your Headlights: California law requires drivers to have their headlights turned on whenever windshield wipers are in continuous use. This helps you see the road and helps other drivers see you.

Avoid Sudden Movements: Accelerate and brake gently. Abrupt steering or hard braking can cause your vehicle to hydroplane and lose contact with the road surface. If you do begin to hydroplane, ease off the accelerator and steer in the direction you want the vehicle to go.

Beware of Standing Water: Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a few inches of flowing water to sweep a vehicle away. If you encounter a flooded road, remember: “Turn Around, Don't Drown.”
