CONGRATULATIONS TO ONE OF OUR OWN!

The Sauk Village Fire Department is proud to recognize Firefighter/Paramedic Janell Krueger, who has been selected as WGN-TV's October First Responder of the Month!

Janell serves our community as a part-time Firefighter/Paramedic, demonstrating the dedication, professionalism, and compassion that are so important in the fire and emergency medical services.

Our firefighters and paramedics work tirelessly to protect lives and serve those in need, often without recognition. It is especially rewarding to see one of our own receive this well-deserved honor.

On behalf of the entire Sauk Village Fire Department, congratulations, Janell! We are proud to have you as part of our department and grateful for your commitment to serving others.

Please join us in congratulating Janell on this outstanding recognition!

THROWBACK THURSDAY – THEN & NOW!

A little trip down memory lane with the Sauk Village Fire Department!

This week's takes us back to the early days of our department with a look at our original fire station (look in the comments for the original black & white photo), followed by a picture of our current fire station and apparatus.

While the buildings, fire trucks, ambulances, and equipment have certainly changed over the years, one thing has remained constant, our commitment to protecting and serving the residents of Sauk Village.

These pictures are a reminder of how far our department has come and of the generations of firefighters who helped build the department into what it is today.

We are proud of our history, grateful to those who came before us, and committed to carrying on their tradition of service.

Now we want to hear from you! Do you remember the original fire station? Did you or someone in your family serve on the department back then, or do you have old photographs or memories you'd like to share? Drop them in the comments! We'd love to hear your stories.

Different eras. Different equipment. Same dedication to our community.

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety: Protect Your Home and Family!

Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives. From cell phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, and other rechargeable devices, these batteries provide convenience, but they can also pose a serious fire hazard when damaged, improperly charged, or used incorrectly.

When a lithium-ion battery fails, it can enter a condition known as thermal runaway, causing intense heat, toxic gases, and a rapidly developing fire that can spread quickly.

The Sauk Village Fire Department reminds residents to follow these important safety tips:

✅ Use the correct charger. Always use chargers and batteries recommended by the manufacturer.

✅ Avoid overcharging. Unplug devices when charging is complete and avoid charging them while sleeping.

✅ Keep batteries away from heat. Never charge devices on beds, couches, or other combustible surfaces.

✅ Watch for warning signs. Stop using batteries that become unusually hot, swell, leak, make strange noises, or produce unusual odors.

✅ Purchase certified products. Look for products tested by recognized safety organizations, such as UL or ETL.

✅ Dispose of batteries properly. Never place lithium-ion batteries in household trash or recycling bins. Take them to an approved battery recycling or hazardous waste collection facility.

⚠️ If a battery begins smoking, hissing, or catching fire, evacuate immediately, stay outside, and call 911. Do not attempt to handle a failing battery or move a burning device.

Lithium-ion battery fires can develop rapidly and produce dangerous conditions with little warning.

Please take a few minutes to watch this important safety video and share it with your family and friends. A little prevention today can help prevent a tragedy tomorrow.

Tomorrow marks 25 years since the day our nation was changed forever. On September 11, 2001, I was on duty here at the Sauk Village Fire Department as a Lieutenant/Paramedic when the terrorist attacks unfolded before our eyes. Like so many others in the fire service, I watched in disbelief as thousands of innocent lives were taken and countless families were forever changed.

We remember the 2,977 souls lost that day — especially the 343 FDNY firefighters who climbed those stairs with courage that words can never fully capture. We also honor the firefighters who continue to pass away even now from illnesses caused by working in the dust and rubble. Their sacrifice did not end on 9/11, and we will never forget them.

But even in the midst of unimaginable tragedy, there was extraordinary heroism. It is estimated that 10,000 to 14,000 people were rescued and evacuated from the World Trade Center before the towers collapsed — the largest and most successful rescue operation in history. Those lives were saved because firefighters, police officers, and everyday citizens refused to give up.

As we observe the 25th anniversary tomorrow, I ask everyone to take a moment to honor those we lost, those we saved, and those who continue to serve. May we never forget the bravery, the sacrifice, and the unity that carried us through one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

We will never forget.

🌳 Limit Outdoor Activity – Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Dress for the Weather – Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
🚗 Never Leave Children or Pets in Vehicles – Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Check on Others – Please check on elderly family members, neighbors, and anyone who may need assistance.
⚠️ Know the warning signs: Heavy sweating, dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, confusion, or loss of consciousness may indicate a heat-related emergency.
If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately.
