On this day in 1944, the U.S. Coast Guard joined Allied forces in one of the most pivotal moments of World War II: D-Day. Braving rough seas and heavy enemy fire, Coast Guard crews piloted landing craft, rescued the wounded, and brought troops ashore at Normandy. Their courage helped shape the course of history. Today, we honor their bravery and sacrifice.

National Safe Boating Week is May 16-22, leading up to Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer boating season. Observed since 1958, this annual campaign reminds boaters, paddlers, personal watercraft operators, and passengers of all ages that preparation, education, and with sound judgment can save lives.

One of the most important steps you can take is also one of the simplest. Wear a life jacket whenever you are on or near the water. Like a seat belt, you may not know when you’ll need it, but when you do, it can save your life. Federal law requires children 12 and under to wear a Coast Guard. approved, properly fitting, and securely fastened life jacket while on a recreational vessel underway. Each person on board is encouraged to wear one. If a life jacket is too large, too small, or not properly secured, it may not work when needed most.

According to U.S. Coast Guard recreational boating statistics, drowning accounted for three-quarters of boating fatalities in 2024, and 87% of those who drowned were not wearing life jacket. NSBW photo and poster by Roger Bazeley, AUXPA1, CGD-SW-NR Coast Guard Auxiliary Public Affairs.

Loose your paddlecraft?
Put an ownership decal in it (available from YOUR Coast Guard Auxiliary) with all of your information in it. If it’s located, you’ll be contacted before a search for you is initiated.

Volunteer for the 2026 National Recreational Boating Safety Survey!

The National Recreational Boating Safety Survey (NRBSS) is a nationwide survey sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard to understand how many people go boating, what types of boats they use, and how often they are on the water. As part of the survey, we are asking for volunteers to complete a brief sign-up page asking about their boating habits and share their contact information with the Coast Guard so a wide range of boaters can be invited to participate in the larger NRBSS survey later in the year.

To volunteer, please go to: https://norcfed.gov1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0ezfBlrTYxLdG4e.
