Public Notice: Water Main Flushing in Your Area
Dear Resident,
The Sheldon Water Department will be performing routine flushing of the water mains in your area on September 30 and October 1 between 11pm and 7 am. This essential maintenance is necessary to:

• Clear the mains of built-up mineral deposits and sediment.
• Ensure the proper operation of fire hydrants for public safety.
• Help maintain overall water quality throughout the system.
What to expect during flushing - During the flushing period, you may experience:
• Temporary discolored water: This is caused by the mineral sediment being stirred up in the water mains. It is harmless but may stain laundry.
• A slight drop in water pressure: This is normal and temporary.
• Visible crews: You may see utility workers operating fire hydrants in your neighborhood.
What you should do
To minimize any inconvenience, we recommend the following:
• Before the flushing begins: If you need to do laundry, finish it before the scheduled time.
• During the flushing:
o Avoid using hot water.
o Minimize your overall water use, especially for laundry.

After the flushing is complete
o Run the cold water tap nearest to your water meter (typically in a basement utility sink or an outside spigot) for several minutes until it runs clear.
o If your water still appears discolored, wait 15–30 minutes for the sediment to settle and then flush the cold water again.
o Once the cold water is clear, you can flush your hot water heater by running the hot water taps until the water runs clear.

Hwy 18 will be closed on Tuesday 9/15. We expect varying closures on Hwy 18 between C St and D St to be ongoing until mid October. Please follow the detour map below. Local access to businesses will be from the east on Hwy 18 then using C St.

We have had a very wet start to September with rain totals of 3.79 inches in the last two days and 4.62 inches for the month so far! Because of the rain sump pumps are starting to run again and we have noticed the increased flow in our sanitary sewer system. PLEASE check your sump pump and make sure it is discharging into your yard, the street, or a storm sewer. If you are unsure what to look for please contact us at 712-324-4651 and we will help determine if your sump pump is discharging properly. Remember discharging your sump pump into the sanitary sewer system will only increase the odds that your house or a neighbors house will have sewer back up. Be a responsible homeowner and help everyone keep their basement dry! Thank you.

This week crews finished the asphalt work at East Lawn Cemetery. Check it out when you get a chance. It turned out really nice!

HWY 18 will be closed for RR track repairs starting on 8/31. The repairs are expected to be completed by 9/4. Please use the detour route on the included map. A second closure in the same area will be happening in mid September. Please drive with caution.
