** Fall Clean-Up Week Scheduled for November 2–6 **

NEXT WEEK!

The Town of Shepherdstown will hold its annual Fall Clean-Up Week Monday, November 2 – Friday, November 6, providing Town residents and businesses with an opportunity to dispose of large and unwanted items.

Participants are asked to limit disposal to one pickup load per residence or business and to place items at their regular trash collection location. All metal materials should be separated from other items.

Accepted items at no charge include furniture, mattresses, general household items, yard waste, and metal items.

For paint disposal, residents should use a product such as Krud Kutter Paint Hardener to solidify any full or partially full cans. Once hardened, lids should be removed before placement for collection.

Certain items require a fee, which must be paid in advance at Town Hall, located at 104 North King Street. These include appliances containing Freon (such as refrigerators, air conditioning units, and dehumidifiers) at $50 each, microwaves at $25 each, passenger tires under 15 inches at $20 each, passenger tires 15 inches and over at $25 each, and televisions at $40 each.

The following items will not be accepted during Fall Clean-Up Week: propane, oil, or gas tanks; compressed gas cylinders; fluorescent light bulbs; building materials such as concrete, dirt, rock, or sod; batteries; hazardous or medical waste; unhardened paint cans; and electronics other than televisions.

For questions or additional information, please contact Town Hall at (304) 876-2312 during regular office hours, Monday through Friday, 8am – 4:30pm.

THANK YOU!

** A Greener Vision for Downtown Shepherdstown **

— From our October Newsletter!

____________________
.. There’s more to the new plantings around downtown Shepherdstown than meets the eye. Beyond adding color and character to the streetscape, the Town project is designed to support healthier trees, attract pollinators, reduce maintenance needs, and make downtown an even more inviting place to explore.

The Town has contracted with Native Havens LLC, which is working alongside Bright Side Landscapes (brightsidellc.com), to take a thoughtful, nature-based approach to transforming the Town’s tree wells, beginning with four of the most prominent planting areas near the intersection of German and King Streets.

“We’re studying the latest approaches in landscaping and trying to use plants as tools to meet common objectives,” explained James Dillon, owner and senior designer at Native Havens.

Rather than relying on traditional wood mulch, the team is introducing native ground covers that create a living layer of vegetation, or “green mulch,” to help keep soil temperatures cooler and improve growing conditions for trees.

“Those plants serve other purposes, too,” said Dillon. “Some provide habitat for caterpillars, while others support specialized bees and pollinators at different times of year. Early-blooming varieties offer resources in March as well, while others flower into October and November.”

The goal, he underscored, is a landscape that works throughout the seasons while offering something beautiful for residents and visitors to enjoy.

** Shepherdstown to Host Bench Dedication Tomorrow at 12pm **

The Town of Shepherdstown will hold a new public bench dedication ceremony tomorrow (Saturday, October 24, at 12pm), at The Wall (in front of McMurran Hall/the clock building) in downtown Shepherdstown.

The unveiling is part of the Town's ongoing efforts to recognize individuals and their connections to the Shepherdstown community through the dedication of public benches, while also celebrating the arts and local creativity.

Saturday's ceremony will spotlight artist Elliana Blevins, an illustrative artist from West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle whose work is characterized by vibrant colors, imaginative lighting, and touches of fantasy.

Blevins currently works as an art instructor at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick, Maryland. Her distinctive artistic style extends across her personal artwork and murals, bringing a colorful, imaginative perspective to public spaces.

The dedication offers an opportunity for residents, families, and visitors to gather, celebrate Blevins' work, and recognize the role of public art in Shepherdstown's community life.

Saturday's event follows a recent bench unveiling at Cullison Park, with additional ceremonies planned for November. The Town will share more information about those upcoming dedications next month.

Residents and community members are encouraged to attend!
We hope to see you there.

** You May Have Noticed **

Visitors arriving in Shepherdstown from Maryland now have an updated resource to help them explore town.

Located on Duke Street near the James Rumsey Bridge, across from the Bavarian Inn, the Town’s three-sided informational kiosk was originally developed several years ago in collaboration with the Canal Towns Partnership.

Recently, the Town worked with the Partnership to replace the outdated map displayed on the kiosk.

The new display features an updated map of Shepherdstown, local landmarks, places to shop, eat, and explore, and QR codes linking to additional information.

Especially useful for pedestrians and cyclists arriving from Maryland and the C&O Canal Towpath, the updated kiosk offers a welcoming introduction to Shepherdstown and helps visitors discover what the community has to offer.

If you have a chance, go check it out!

From this month's Newsletter!

_____

** Biz Spotlight: Wild Laurel Boutique **

— For Lauren Taylor, Founder of Wild Laurel Boutique (119 W. German St.), opening a shop of her own was a longtime ambition rooted in family, creativity, and a love of fashion and interiors.

Growing up in West Virginia, Taylor spent much of her childhood working in her parents’ furniture store and gift shop. She eventually earned an MBA with hopes of starting her own business, though her career took her into corporate accounting, where she continues to work as a CPA while running the store.

Wild Laurel (https://wildlaurelboutique.com/) brings those interests together in a carefully curated mix of clothing, accessories, and home goods. “I wanted the clothing to feel polished but still relaxed and wearable—pieces you could wear to work, out to dinner, or just throughout everyday life,” she noted.

Alongside clothing and loungewear, shoppers will also find candles, seasonal décor, linens, table-setting accessories, and Shepherdstown-themed merchandise. Taylor pays particular attention to presentation, hoping the store feels inviting and full of unexpected discoveries.

To that end, Shepherdstown, with its independent businesses and walkable downtown, felt like a natural home for the boutique, Taylor emphasized. “I wanted Wild Laurel to add to that experience and give people one more reason to spend an afternoon exploring Shepherdstown.”

Since opening, Taylor has especially enjoyed building relationships with customers. Conversations with regulars help shape what she stocks, while visitors who discover the shop during a trip to Shepherdstown often continue following or shopping with Wild Laurel online.

For Taylor, the experience is as important as the merchandise. She enjoys watching mothers, daughters, and granddaughters browse together, each finding something that reflects their own style. “I want people to feel like they’ve discovered something special when they walk in.”

That might mean finding a new outfit, exploring the candle selection, or simply spending a few minutes browsing without any pressure to buy.

Looking ahead, Taylor hopes Wild Laurel becomes a familiar part of the downtown experience—a place residents return to regularly and visitors remember long after leaving town. “More than anything, I’d love for it to become a lasting part of the downtown community while still keeping the personal, small-shop experience that makes it special.”
