Did you know that some plants do not produce chlorophyll? Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is a unique species of native plant that, unlike most plants, does not make its own food through photosynthesis, hence its completely white color. Rather, members of this genus are parasitic, engaging in an unusual parasitic symbiosis with both trees and mycorrhizal fungi. Ghost pipe forms a parasitic relationship with Russula and Lactarius fungi, drawing carbohydrates from these mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi in turn, acquire these sugars through their mutualistic symbiosis with various tree species! Ghost pipe is found in moist, rich coves and other woodland sites in Kentucky and throughout North America. Be sure to keep an eye out for Monotropa’s ‘ghostly’ presence on your next hike through the woods on a summer evening.
