Children don't have to be physically harmed to be impacted by domestic violence. Witnessing threats, intimidation, controlling behavior, or living in a home filled with fear can affect their emotional well-being, development, and sense of safety.

An abusive parent may be loving, involved, and attentive to their children in many ways. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻. 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

Domestic violence isn't simply a relationship problem between two adults.

This is one of the most harmful and dismissive misconceptions about domestic violence.

What outsiders may call "drama" can actually be fear, manipulation, threats, emotional attachment, financial dependence, or someone desperately trying to keep the peace.

Victims may stay because leaving feels more dangerous than staying, because they hope things will change, or because they simply don't have a safe way out.

𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮. 𝗔𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

When we label someone's experience as "drama," we minimize the abuse and place blame on the very person experiencing it.

𝗔𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀.

Too often, people expect to see physical injuries before they believe someone is experiencing domestic violence.

But abuse can look like threats, intimidation, humiliation, isolation, financial control, manipulation, or living in constant fear of someone's reaction.

Even physical violence doesn't always leave visible marks.

𝗔 𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲.

When someone shares that they're being abused, our first response shouldn't be to look for injuries or question why there aren't any.

𝗔𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲.

A good job. Financial stability. A beautiful home. Supportive friends and family. From the outside, someone may appear to have everything they need to leave an abusive relationship.

But 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆.

Fear, threats, manipulation, emotional attachment, concerns about children, and the risk of violence don't disappear because someone has money or a successful career.

And even with a strong support system, victims may fear judgment, disbelief, or the consequences of speaking out.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺?

It sounds simple, right? Block their number, delete them from social media, and move on.

But leaving an abusive relationship is rarely that simple.

Children, shared finances, property, or legal matters may make communication necessary. And sometimes, blocking an abuser can actually escalate threats, harassment, or violence.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆? 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘆.

New phone numbers, fake accounts, mutual friends, or showing up in person—blocking doesn't always stop the contact.

For some victims, keeping communication open may even be part of their safety plan.

💜 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀.
Domestic violence is often rooted in power and control. When a victim takes legal action, an abusive partner may view it as a loss of that control.

The filing of a protection order, being served with court paperwork, or being ordered to stay away can sometimes trigger an escalation in threats, intimidation, stalking, harassment, or violence.

𝗔 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿.

While protection orders can provide important legal protections and consequences for violations, they cannot guarantee that an abusive person will comply.

This is why 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 is so important before, during, and after the protection order process.

And it's also why we should never assume that someone who has obtained a protection order is suddenly free from fear or danger.
