As we gather with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate our nation’s independence, the Sinclairville Volunteer Fire Company wants to ensure everyone in our community stays safe this Independence Day.

While fireworks and outdoor celebrations are a staple of the holiday, they also bring an increased risk of fire and personal injury. We ask that you keep the following safety guidelines in mind to protect your loved ones and your property:

Fireworks Safety
• Leave it to the Professionals: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public display handled by licensed professionals.
• Know the Law: Always obey local laws regarding the use of consumer fireworks.
• Maintain a Safe Distance: If consumer fireworks are legal in your area, ensure spectator areas are a safe distance away, and never attempt to re-light a "dud" firework.
• Supervise Children: Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures hot enough to melt certain metals and can easily ignite clothing.
• Disposal: Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby. Soak spent and unused fireworks completely in water before discarding them in a metal trash bin.

Grilling & Outdoor Cooking
• Location Matters: Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, siding, deck railings, and out from under overhanging branches or eaves.
• Never Leave Unattended: A fire can spread in seconds. Always keep a close eye on your grill while it is lit.
• Clear the Area: Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the grilling zone.

Brush and Open Fires
• Check the Weather: High winds and dry conditions can turn a small backyard fire into an unmanageable brush fire instantly. If it is windy, skip the campfire.

Have a happy, healthy, and responsible Independence Day!

🚒 June 27th, 2026 - Structure Fire

On Saturday morning at approximately 6:28 AM, emergency crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire. Initial responding units arrived to find heavy smoke, with a fast-moving fire that originated in a decorative outdoor lantern before spreading from a nearby bush up into a tree, the soffit, and an attached garage.

Firefighters quickly established water lines from nearby hydrants, opened the roof to ventilate the heavy smoke, and successfully contained the fire before it could consume the main living quarters. Sinclair Drive was temporarily closed to ensure the safety of our operations. All units were cleared from the scene by 8:02 AM.

🤝 A True Team Effort
An incident of this scale requires seamless teamwork, and we are incredibly grateful for our neighboring departments who stepped up to assist. Whether they were running active operations on the scene or were "tapped out" and ultimately canceled en route as the fire was brought under control, their readiness to protect our community is deeply appreciated.

Thank you to the following agencies for your mutual aid:
• Cassadaga FD
• Gerry FD
• Ellington FD
• Ellery Center FD
• Falconer FD
• Chautauqua County Emergency Services
• Fire Police

🕯️ A Quick Fire Safety Reminder
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of how quickly an accidental fire can spark and spread.

While candles and decorative lanterns create a warm atmosphere, please remember:
• Never leave an open flame unattended, even in an outdoor lantern.
• Always extinguish candles completely before going to bed or leaving the area.
• Keep flammable items, including bushes, mulch, and decorations, well away from any open flame.

Stay safe, everyone!
