BEHIND THESE WALLS: Brick House at Sycamore Cross

Just south of Sycamore Cross in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, the ruins of a two-story brick home stand in a field off Proctors Bridge Road. Set back from the road on a sparse lot, it is partially covered in vegetation and surrounded by a large agricultural field.

The structure was constructed circa 1825 and once exhibited stylistic influences and features typical of the time period.

While the structure has been vacant for generations, it has long been a landmark in this agricultural area – often mentioned as a waypoint for travelers.

LIVE at 12:05: From Post-Mortem to Public Record in Isle of Wight County, Virginia

Coroners' inquisitions are investigations into the deaths of individuals who died by a sudden, violent, unnatural or suspicious manner--or without medical attendance.

These documents, many of which have been digitized by the Library of Virginia, span from the colonial-era until 1950 and often include the inquisition, depositions and summons as well as the name of the coroner, the names of the jurors, the name and age of the deceased if known, gender and race of the deceased and when, how and by what means the deceased came to his or her death.

Join volunteer Chris Claud as he examines two cases from the files: Georgia Diggs of 1925 and H.V. Persons of 1926.
