2nd grade’s Learning Expedition is all about Art in Our Community, and today they had an expert visitor from the Center for Puppetry Arts who taught them how to make their own puppets, which they will use to present a puppet show at their Celebration of Learning in December. A huge thank you to the three fathers who came to help our student puppeteers create their masterpieces!

As part of their ELEducation , 6th graders from Amana West teamed up with Her H.O.P.E. Foundation to support female veterans in our community. They collected donations of canned goods and monetary contributions today at American Legion Post 291 and helped promote Her HOPE foundation's Winter Party Fundraiser. Students this semester are exploring causes of food insecurity and designing solutions to help people in their community. Starting 10/16, they are hosting a canned good and warm coat drive to benefit the veterans served by Her HOPE. You can drop donations off at Amana West between 10/16 and 11/16.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Hispanic Heritage Community Circle last Friday. We had a great turnout! A very special thank you to Donna Edmonds and all of the students, families, and staff who were a part of Friday’s culminating celebration. It was a beautiful way to celebrate and highlight the rich history and heritage of our Hispanic community!

Now in our second week of school, Amana West students are model citizen scholars in classroom, cafeteria, and safety drills settings; but let's rewind ⏪to see how we got here. After completing preplanning week, Amana's Crew LOVED 🥰 meeting returning and new families at Base Camp and Open House the week before! Drawing on our ELEducation school model, Base Camp (our version of new family orientation) promoted courage and adventure---parents 'circled-up' to get to know each and learn the same classroom protocols as their children were experiencing independently with teachers as a slice of life at Amana. WE can't wait to share photos😶‍🌫️...from the historic ribbon cutting 🎀ceremony.

Congratulations to our Kindergarten students for kicking off our Celebrations of Learning yesterday! They were confident and courageous as they showcased all they learned this semester about living and non-living things, as well as family and connection across different generations. We're so proud of all of their hard work this year, and can't wait to see what they accomplish next year in first grade!

Celebrations of learning are more than a display of student work and more than a party at the end of the year. The events encourage students to reflect on and share what they have learned, how they learned, questions they answered, research they conducted, and areas of strength and struggles. They are powerful opportunities to make learning public.

Check out some of their performances below.

We escaped the island! A huge thank you to Ms. Guerra for planning a fun-filled culmination to our annual Amazing Race! And another big thank you to our parent volunteers and our staff crew members who helped to make sure it was a successful event for our students who either earned the prize for escaping the island or a movie and popcorn. Each weekly destination was an opportunity for students to practice grade level standards and we are proud of their hard work in preparation for end of year testing!
